Holiday shows

I'm struggling with this one. Which Christmas/holiday shows should I let my little guy watch? He has been watching Frosty on DVD and loving it. We tried Little Drummer Boy and I watched in horror as in the first 2 minute his parents were killed by bandits. Oops! I forgot that part! Fast forward!

I remember Rudolph scaring me as a child, and I'm afraid The Polar Express might be too intense.

Any thoughts on which shows might be most appropriate?

Well, you're forgetting about the absolute best - A Charlie Brown Christmas!

When I was a kid, I had the record...and would listen to it all year long. Needless to say, I can repeat it line by line (not that I do - that would be obnoxious! lol)

TJ is into Frosty. I tried Rudolph, but it's too scary. Frosty is just sweet, he loves it. We have the book too so when he begs for Frosty, I pull out the book about 1/2 of the time.

Everything I can think of might be too old for him or scary. (Grinch who Stole Christmas?)

You might check out this link...they have a lot of suggestions. Another 101 Christmas Videos to Watch and Enjoy (2007 Edition) - Christmas - Fanpop

Also, don't forget the Veggie Tales...I know we had a couple of Christmas ones.

We shy away from the cartoon variety (though I kinda like Veggie Tales, as do the kids). (This will certainly show my age, I know).....but have you considered showing some of the old Christmas favorites? I suspect your little one is very young, but even my 'almost two year old' really enjoys the Shirley Temple videos. (Yep, surprised me too.)
And, there's always the added benefit of the songs in some of them. To me (and my kids would agree) some of the best Christmas shows are White Christmas (Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye) , Holiday Inn (Bing Crosby), The Lemon-Drop Kid (Bob Hope), and Meet Me in St. Louis (Judy Garland and many others).
Those are just the musical ones they love---and they're now 7yrs, 5yrs and almost 2yrs.

Ones w/o musical numbers your child might like would be the Charlie Brown Christmas (and that DOES have great music themes), as well as anything from Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, etc...
I know a lot of us think kids will only watch shows with flash and dash to them---but I think you'd be very surprised with a lot of kids. The oldies have a very soothing effect, without the loud, scarey stuff that's seen so much today! (Gads, I tire of it.... sigh)
(I continue to dislike INTENSELY the Grinch, because I think it's a VERY scarey character for many children.---let's remember the original cartoon Grinch had the voice of Boris Karloff....who played the infamous Frankenstein!!!! THAT creeped me out as a kid!)

I hope this might help. Give it a try. You might be very pleasantly surprised...

Sincerely,

Linny

For any of you "veteran" parents, do you remember Nester the Long Ear Donkey? Or Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas? REALLY random shows...

Nester is along the lines of the Little Drummer Boy...

Nester's a donkey with super long ears and is teased by everyone...He and his mom are caught in a snowstorm, and she dies trying to protect him from the elements...Ultimately, he's the one who brings Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem...but YEESH!!

Emmett Otter is about a group of otters who like to play music...Well, Emmet wants to play a washtub guitar thing, and puts a hole in his mom's washtub...So on Christmas eve they have to play in a competition to win money to buy her a new washtub...There's a "mean" group they play against - I think they're snakes or eels or something...

Seriously - this stuff is so random, it makes me wonder who is writing it...But if they happen to come across my tv, you can bet I'll be watching!!

Oh my Gosh talk about a flashback! Emmett Otter, wow. That was huge for us...it was a Jim Hennson production.

Yah know what, IMO I think we need more of those old school Hennson-ish shows and less cheaply produced "Bratz" Christmas specials. (Maybe someone somewhere will hear my plea....LESS narcissistic variety shows - cheapo straight to dvd cartoons & MORE Muppets pleeeeaassssee )

Amen, Binky...

I was discussing movies with a forum member just last night and said that it's nice to bring my boys back to MY childhood for a few weeks...Put Spongebob to the side bring on the classics!!

And although Emmett Otter isn't exactly a "classic", my son is TOTALLY into music and would love that side of it!

We were all talking about our favorites last night too. Lots of old school movies were mentioned. My one sister is in love with an old Disney animation short about a little donkey who carries Mary...called "the small one". For years she couldn't get a copy because there was some legal thing with Disney, but it was released eventually in a set.

Of course we all landed on "A Christmas Story" and the guy my other sis is dating (new relationship) had no clue what we were all talking about. We're throwing out "do the piggie" "It's a Major Award" "I can't put my arms down" "you'll shoot your eye out" "triple dog dare yah" and nothing...cricket cricket...nothing. I'm going to have to see what planet is listed on his drivers license

What a dud! I can't believe he didn't know that movie!!! But then again, the kid at work (he's 19) never heard of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation!

I love the part in the Christmas Story where the bullys are chasing the kids and Ralphie says

"Randy laid there like a slug...it was his only defense..."

I just love Christmas movies...

Santa Claus is coming to town is the best! even the bad guy- the Winter Warlock has his frosty heart melt!

Last year I took my son to a local Borders. There was live entertainment. Two guy and one of their wives did Emmett Otter. Total participation with the kids. My son loved playing the washtub bass. It was totally corny, totally fun! I'm going to look for it again.

I'm old. I'm 44. I have never see Christmas Story or It's A Wonderful Life. I have It's A Wonderful Life on video, but never watched it.

Blue Clues has a really nice video - Blue's First Christmas. I have/had an Elmo holiday one too. It showed all the different holidays, I think Blue Clues did too. If you can stand the Wiggles, Yule Be Wiggling is great.

THE SNOWMAN is beautiful. Very sweet and nothing scary. My little ones just love it. Also, TOOT&PUDDLE have a dvd called "I'll
Be Home For Christmas" (again, very sweet with no scary or intense parts). And the Disney Pooh Bear has a Super Sleuths Christmas dvd with Darby & the gang. Again, very sweet.

THERE ARE EIGHT DIFFERENT WAYS YOUR CHILD CAN DIE ON A CORDED WINDOW TREATMENT
Read "How Safe Cords Kill" at www.pfwbs.org

THREE CHILDREN HAVE STRANGLED TO DEATH SINCE ANGEL DIED ON 8/11/09.
Brandyn Coppedge died on 9/11/09. Rosie Smith died on 9/30/09 and Thapelo Kwofie died on 11/1/09. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is no longer recommending safety kits. They are now recommending that anywhere children live or visit should be free of corded window products.
