Ours was very quick. We finalized in September and got the birth certificate about a month later. We have already gotten a Social Security number. Once you get the birth cert, go to the SSN website. They have a form to fill out and it tells you what you need to take with you. I took the form and a certified copy of the birth cert and adoption decree.
I think you might even be able to apply for the SSN by mail, but you have to send your official copies to them. They say they will return them to you, but I was worried we would never see them again, so I just went in person.

Two weeks for the birth certificate for us, but I think that really depends on your state.
For the SSN, we needed Sam's new birth cert, her adoption decree, and her immunization records. The immunization records where "proof" that she existed. I think there are other documents you can bring in place of the immunization records if you don't have those. Definately call ahead to your local SS office so you bring the right things the first time. After we applied for her SSN, we had her card in the mail within about 10 days.

We finalized in April and I got it in the fall if I remember correctly - it was about 8 months I think... I remember calling the state (California) to ask about the status 6 months after we finalized and they told me to wait a little longer.

We're still waiting here... It's been 2 months. I know the SSN takes 2 weeks or less, at least it's what it took for mine 5 years ago...

I received the b.c. about 5 months after finalizing, which was actually a little sooner than I was told to expect it.

I think 2 or 3 months for the BC. After I had all the paperwork I needed, just a couple weeks for a SSN. Supa, it is such a nice feeling having the BC. I totally understand your looking forward to it!

I know it's silly... but I just want the BC SOON so I can get them a SSN and not have to worry about taxes next year... We didn't get a temporary number for them and now we can't as it's finalized...

Supa~we just got ours last week. We finalized two weeks after you did. They told us it would take up to 12 weeks. So I was really surprised. They did manage to send our adoption decree the day after we finalized. Are some states faster then others? I was kind of hoping the ss# won't take long.

It must vary a lot from state to state. DD was born in Oregon and they seem to be a bit slower. Her adoption was finalized in August and we still haven't gotten her revised BC yet. I am hoping to have it soon so I can get her SS #.

It took us awhile for the BC. Finalized in July and just got her new BC last month...but the attorney needed a form signed by us in order to obtain it and she didn't get that done prior so that held it up.
As for the new SSN...you'll need the new BC, the adoption decree and the immunization records. They needed all that for us. We had her SSN changed because of her age and her bioparents having her old SSN (they are both in prison) so we didn't wish to take any chances! Still awaiting the new SSN though and it's been a month now.
