Children's books with adoption themes? (not sure how to word that!)

We dh and I have a couple Rubbermaid tubs full of our favorite children's books, just waiting to share them with our future children. We just realized that we don't think any of those books have families that were built by adoption - at least none that we can think of offhand. Do you have any picture books at your house that deal with adoption? We want to add Jamie Lee Curtis's Tell Me Again about the Night I was Born for sure, but we knew that you guys would have some other great ideas! Thanks for any suggestions you have!!

My favorite is "We Wanted You" by Liz Rosenberg. This is a good book for both domestic and international adoptions and is so sweet.

Enjoy!

We have "Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born" (as you already mentioned) and it's a great book! We also have "On The Night You Were Born" by Nancy Tillman. It's another very good book!!

I bought "Over the Moon" for our kids and we love it! it is geared toward Latin American adoptions but it adapts well for our situation.

This is my favorite plug. Try Pact. Go to Welcome to Pact, An Adoption Alliance. They have a section on their website called "our favorite books" broken down by age level. They give a quick description and review of each. They list many wonderful adoption related books, including books about transracial and international adoption. It's a great resource.

We have A Mother for Choco, which we like. We also really like Emma's Yucky Brother - it's about adopting from the public system.

My daughter and I love Litte Miss Spider, it's a heart-string puller for sure.

This book isn't about adoption, per se, but Stellaluna, is a book about a little bat that lands in a bird's nest. It definately has an adoption theme, but not adoption per se....

You're welcome. I'm glad you found it helpful! We love Pact. They are a wonderful resource - especially for those of us who adopted transracially.

Stellaluna is one of my favorite children's books. Actually, I like all of Janell Cannon's books - but it never occurred to me that it was an adoption book!

OakShannon....most people who just read it does not see the adoption theme in it. As a college student, in Children's Lit, our Prof read it to us. She then wanted us to "explore" the book. I was the only one that made the adoption connection, but when I mentioned it, the others could see how as an adoptee, you could relate to lil' stellaluna. I am not saying it is how all adoptees feel, or even myself overall, but there is that theme.....
