OT-Cloth diapers

I know I have found several people on here who cloth diaper. I am needing some advice. I need to get more cloth diapers in preparation for beginning foster care. (I have already been given permission to cloth diaper foster kids.) Right now I have enough Bumgenius to get my kids through one day. I cannot afford to buy another stock of Bumgenius right now... So, can anyone reccomend some good, yet inexpensive cloth diapers?

Also, is there a way I can sterilize when we switch kids besides using bleach?

Thanks!

I am not sure about Bumgenius cause I don't use those, but the prefold you can just boil. I boil mine every so often to make sure they start nice and absorbant and have no odors. I think boiling would work fine to disinfect between children, but I'm not really sure you would have to bother. I guess if one kid was really sick or whatever? Had a contageous illness maybe? Never thought about it.

I already PM'd you my recommendation. You can also look for them used...though I never really found any good deals on used anywhere...I bet if you looked for used prefolds and wraps you could find them though. (I use proraps...prowrap? Not sure on spelling) sometimes people buy those to try out cloth diapering and when they like it, they go to the designer ones...

I don't think you will need to sterilize between kiddos, unless one has a yucky bug or something. Lots of moms use a one-size-fits-all stash that works for multiple kiddos in diapers at one time just for convenience purposes.

I once read something along the line of why do you feel the need to sterilize diapers, you don't sterilize clothes, right? That being said, I would follow the mfg's directions to use a little bleach on our bg's once in awhile just to make sure they were getting clean. I would have done the same if I ever bought used diapers. I would be comfortable following the same process when one kiddo moved on to get ready for the next.

As for what kind of diapers, I loved our GMD Indian prefolds. Super soft, and so easy to wash. I really only used GMD prefolds for day and bg's for night. I don't think there is anything easier than prefolds.

Since I have gone back to work, we have gradually transitioned to full time sposie use. Yuck, but I don't have time to wash pj's, much less diapers. I really, really miss cloth diapering.

Okay, sorry so long, but that leads me to my last point. I'm been thinking for a few weeks now that it is time to part with my stash...I'm running out of storage space. If you are potentially interested, you can send me a pm and I will take some pics (might even be able to pull it together tonight). I would love to know that my precious stash is going to a great home!

Beth.- I will send you a PM.

The only reason I think I would need to sterilize is because we are very open to medical stuff so we could get a baby with anything from HIV to HEP C to anything else... Right now my boys share diapers and I don't sterilize. But I know they do not have anything passed through fluids.

I like prefolds trifolded with a wrap or cover over them (bummis super whisper wrap).

check out the diaper swappers forum. They have a for sale or trade section on there.

Hey Marci,

For foster kids you would probably want a inexpensive onesize solution, so yeah, prefolds would probably be best. It will be a bit of an adjustment from pockets though. For covers around the house, if you or someone you know sews, you can sew up some fleece soakers from the Katrina's Soaker Pattern. It's free. We use them around the house all the time. They are cute, convenient and cheap! They don't work to well under clothes though, except sleepers and fleece sweats. You'd want a PUL (or wool if you are up to it) cover to wear under clothes and for going out.

Also, search out the forsales in you area. Sometimes people are selling off some stuff super cheap. If you could get another bunch of OS pockets, you'd be golden. I saw someone local selling a dozen Happy Heiny OS the other day for like $50. You just have to keep an eye out. Another thing to watch for is a local WAHM that is just getting going. You may be able to get some pretty nice diaps for cheap.
If shipping to the States from Canada wasn't so $$$$, I'd send you a big stack of new contour diaps a friend gave me. She made dozens for her kids and none of them CD'd their babes. I am using some, but there are dozens. (I will check into the shipping maybe???)

As for disinfecting, a good hot wash with a little tea tree oil should disinfect pretty good. Add a kettle or 2 of boiling water if you need to. If you are worried about a highly contagious medical condition, I would probably use a few capfuls of bleach then give a couple extra rinses.

Bless all of you who use cloth diapers. I had to with my son (12 years ago) becasue he had an allergy to something in the disposable. It was always a chore to have enough clean diapers on hand.

Bumgenius are really expensive but worth the money. I'd check out Etsy.com for handmade, inexpensive cloth diapers. Also, you could use inserts to add to the absorbtion of a thinner diaper.

Another one if you haven't seen it yet is hyenacart.com!

Soooo much nice stuff. Wish I had an endless supply of money to buy it all up for both the cuteness and support the wonderful world of WAHMs!

Watch out for the addiction factor on Hyenacart. LOL. Related, check out Spots Corner (google it) which is where you can buy and sell gently used cloth diapers, covers, and other homemade goods.

My new addiction (though I'm still addicted to Goodmamas) is wool. Mmmwool.

Hyenacart won't completely load for me. I liked spots corner ok, but I like that they have reviews on Etsy by other cloth diapering Momma's. So you know the person has made them before. The diapers look a little less expensive too?

I'm telling people Ty needs AIO diapers for Christmas. He's ready for the next size up and since I'm clearly sticking with the cloth diapering, I want the nice stuff. It will be good to have some AIO's for our next babies too
