More than just children have immune issues! I take immune suppression therapy every month. As a Nanny, I would only care for children who were Vax'd. I'm all for spacing or delaying etc though That's what I do with Ty. But I second Devildog...there is plenty of stuff out there that can harm our children. I will do what I can to protect him. I feel like the link to Autism is a smaller risk since it's unproven. As it is I worry that children who are not vax'd could challenge even an immunized child's ability to fight off some things. With so many not vaxing, the whole herd effect is going right out the window...

So has anyone asked their child's peditrician to alter the vaccination schedule? Just wondering as I am considering asking DD's to stretch it out a little and not give her so many at once.
She got really sick last time she got her shots. I tried to tell them my concerns last time and kind of got ignored and made to feel like I had no idea what I was talking about because DD is our first baby. The first shots they gave her made her a little sick. The last time she screamed so loudly and so often that she lost her voice. She was like that for almost 3 hours. She ended up with diarehhea (SP?) so badly that it was clear up to her shoulder blades and down the toes of her jammies. Yes those went in the garbage. Is it ok to stick to my beliefs and say no? This time I know they want to give her a flu shot on top of the 6 types of medicine she had last time. I would rather pay for 3 visits than have her go through that again.

Yup, absolutely!!! I agree with what everyone here is saying about the importance of vaccines and hate the idea of the "free rider" issue - but you can absolutely do it on your schedule. Just stick to your guns, be well informed, polite but insistent. I hate doing that kind of stuff - but then the alternative is just not ok with me. Like I said, we stretched ours out and still haven't done MMR but will in the next year. One at a time!

I would find another pediatrician if mine didn't agree with what I want for my kids. Definitely nothing wrong with delaying vaccines!

I have thought many times about spreading them out but I can't figure out how to find a doctor in my area that does that.

This has been an interested thread, both of my sons are vaccinated and I did spread them out. I do believe the genetic deposition of the child (due to the parents age/health), environment and shots MAY trigger autism. After both of my boys have their shots, I watched them like a hawk to see if there were any differences in their behavior. Thankfully all is well and I am grateful.
I do believe in the importance of vaccinations and I fully support restricting a child who isn’t vaccinated into a school or nursery(not to start a debate). Not to long ago there was an article in the New York Daily News about a child that had small pox and the consequences it had on the school and community where the child lived. So I’m the kind of parent that asks daycare centers do they require proof of immunization before they admit children? -Manni28 |

We have tried to spread out the vaccines a little, after we started hearing more about the problems. My intention was to give the MMR shot seperately but we couldn't find it. The one manufacturer that was making the 3rd shot out of the 3 had "discontinued" it according to the pharmacy that carried it previously and had the first two. I also mentioned waiting until later and the dr. said measles, etc. was higher these days b/c of people not vaccinating so he didn't want to see me wait too long. I was scared but thankfully no reaction or changes so far, knock on wood. The only vaccines we're not getting is the flu and chicken pox.

Hi Manny, I am just curious about this - how can they require proof of vaccinations? And do daycares actually not allow kids in because of this? Alot of people do't vaccinate due to religious reasons - so what happens then? Also - my son came home at 3 and we had to start the schedule over - by kindergarten he still had not had everything. So do you think all these kids should not be allowed in daycares, schools etc? Honestly just curious, not trying to start anything.

It's pretty easy. When you find a pediatrician (through a personal referral; through your medical insurance; or you can even call a local hospital and ask for the Medical Staff Office and ask them to give you the name and number of a good pediatrician in the area) call their office and tell them you're interested in a doctor who will spread out the vaccinations. That's what I did when we were first looking for a pediatrician. Most of them will also meet with you at no charge before deciding on that doctor. |

Totally can understand your concerns about Autism. I am on an Autism team at work specifically assisitng parents and professionals on how to best work with children with Autism. There are some things that you can look for with your child. There is actually a checklist for autism in toddlers to see if there are some tendency/characteristics towards it. As for why we are seeing it more today.... you need to remember that in the world of psychology/medicine it is a newer diagnosis and as professionals have learned more about it they have become better at diagnosising it. Hope this helps.

In response to an earlier post (sorry, can't remember who first started talking about it)
, but M's daycare does require proof of vaccinations before they will allow anyone into the daycare. My daughter's daycare provider is very firm on protecting ALL of the children; just one of the many reasons that we love and trust her! There is a school/daycare that M will be enrolled in next year and they require the same thing. I think it is starting to be very popular to require vaccinations. There are too many risks (children getting sick/lawsuits, that kind of stuff) too not require it. I love that this is happening; vaccinations protect our children from a lot, but if there is a child that is not vaccinated and catches a life threatening disease, obviously they are affected, but so are other children, vaccinated and not. Vaccinations are great, but not 100%. Quite honestly, it scares me, when I hear more and more people are not vaccinationg their children. It truly scares me.

Thank you. My reluctance is that I don't want to switch peds JUST because of the shot schedule. It doesn't necessarily mean they are the right doc for us kwim?

Storm...do you mean splitting the MMR, or spreading like I do, only one shot per visit?
Cause EVERY Dr should have to spread if you ask them too. If you don't sign the paper saying that E can have all the shots, how can they give them? I don't think you have to find a dr that does it. I think you just tell the Dr. they ARE doing it. I don't think every clinic stocks the split MMR shots. I talked to our NP about it and she said that they didn't and if we wanted them we would have to ask them to order them, and pay out of pocket for them, cause they are more expensive. She said that the last person who wanted to order them it was going to cost them $150, and in the end they couldn't even get them after trying for 6 months the Mom had her son get the combo shot. So that's about all I know on the MMR. I'm going to delay Ty's till he's a little older than recommended, and I'm going to give him a month on each side instead of the 2 weeks I do between them now.
