Adoption costs per year

Hi all - FINALLY I found a forum on adoption "thank god"!
I have a question to ask and feel like I am a grain of sand in the Sarhara desert.
Ok, my wife and I have attended the adoption process but I have a question via taxes.
Hypothetically, say it takes roughly $5K to begin the process. And ofcourse will take a bit more before we go in the book.

If I pay $5K now, can I claim that in my 2008 taxes? And if I need to pay another $5K to get in the book March 2009, do I get to claim that in 2010?
So does it go like this:
$5K refund from 2008 taxes
$5K refund from 2009 taxes
I think I am elgible for something like $11650 so I am not sure if I only get refunds the day we adopt or if it can be broken out per year.

I deleted an offensive reply to this thread and the OP's reply to that post and then moved it to a more appropriate place.

gophertee, I'm sorry you were attacked for making a simple mistake, like posting in the wrong forum. I hope you'll come back.

Hi Gophertree, welcome to the forums. I'm sorry you are off to a rocky start. May I suggest that you look in the "adoptive parent" category. I think you will find a wealth of information about adopting. I'm sorry for your wife's inability to bear children: that is a loss that you will have to mourn (I'm sure you are.) I wish you well in your quest to adopt.

You will find that all of us are capable of saying things that are hot buttons for someone else. Usually this is unintentional, but we have a lot of hurting people here who often post out of their pain.

Short answer, no...

Money you spen in 2008 can be claimed on your 2009 taxes field in spring 2010. Unless you were to finalize in 2008.

For example: we adopted in July 2006. All fees paid in 2006. But we finalized in 2007. So, we did not get any of our tax credit until February 2008.

hi there and welcome! We're always looking to add more Dad's to the mix!!!

In short. Mommamarci is exactly right! We started our adoption journey in 2007, but could not claim any of that when we filed in 2008. We adopted in Jan of this year and just finalized, so we'll claim everything from 2007 and 2008 when we file our 2008 taxes in Feb 2009. Had we NOT adopted or not finalized in 2008, we could have claimed those 2007 expenses on our 2008 taxes, but not anything paid in 2008. So unless you are finalized all expense are held back a year seems to be the simple way to say it

I also wanted to let you know that there is talk of the tax credit ending in 2010. If that is something you are sure you would qualify for and would make a difference in your financial planning, I would look into that.

Best of Luck! Hope you'll come back for more than financial help...this site is a great resource
