Same here...In fact, we always get the old "Oh you must be Catholics" because our boys names are traditional and biblical...

If only they knew that we came up with Adam while watching Happy Gilmore...

We originally liked the name Alexandra and nick name Lexi. My SIL's sister named her daughter Alexis and nick name Lexi. Needless to say, we didn't use that name.

Now checking on the Soc Sec site, I hadn't thought of. We love DD's name but have since seen three more girls with her name (varied ages) in her daycare alone. Ugh.

FInally I LOVE your daughters name.

The truth is a beautiful name is a beautiful name. That's why they are so popular! And in most parts of life after school you are not around people born in the same year or two as you are....at work, etc....

Thanks and you are right. Most likely she won't be around others with her name after school. It isn't as common as it seems. I don't know any adults personally with her name.

You know what the worst is...when someone uses a name you like for their dog. That is an absolute deal breaker for me! I used to really like the name Charlie, but a few years ago my sister got a dog and sure enough Charlie is his name! Or my husband loves the name Max but growing up my grandparents had a dog named Max. When someone says Max my thoughts automatically go to that dog so I don't think I could ever use that name.

My son overheard us talking baby names and suggests that we just name the baby 'Baby". He has a goldfish named fishy and he named all 3 of his stuffed animal pigs piggy.

HaHa!!! My DH loved the name Sam...but I told him there was NO WAY we were using that name since every dog my Grandparent's have had since the 70's has been named Sam...

Heart

We chose our children's name from hearing them from other people. The problem I had was being a teacher and having kids in my class that were trouble makers and not wanting to use some names for that reason. LOL

Its funny, I only discovered the SS site last week.

When I named my son "Malik" I thought it was such a beautiful, unique name and living in Hawai'i I had never met another Malik. In fact, at that time I only knew of an actor and a basketball player with that name (besides Malcolm X, of course). Since my son's birth we have met, maybe... 3 or 4 "Maliks".

Then I put his name in on the SS website and the most popular year for the name Malik was 1996 Yep, the year my son was born Oh well. I still think it is a beautiful and unique name

You all should check out this amazing site on name popularity:

NameVoyager: Baby Name Wizard Graph of Most Popular Baby Names | The Baby Name Wizard

Really, I could spend hours on this site.

You know, there are so many names out there that I'd love to use, but I'm restricted. Anabel was named after husband's mother, Anne, who died when he was a boy. And after my father died last year we know we'd be naming our next kid after him - Michael if it's a boy and Michaela if it's a girl. And these are pretty common names these days - oh well. So no matter what other names I love, we're just stuck!

If I let my 4 yr old son pick the name - it would be pickles. He thinks that's a great name. what a screwball.

My sister, who is due with her first this December, had that exact same problem when she and her DH were talking about names!

I second the recommendation for the NameVoyager. She has a great blog about naming trends, too.

I have a name obsession, which has made picking names really tough, especially for boys. I visit the social security website regularly and have vowed to avoid names higher than 300 on the popularity list. Anything I like my husband then rejects. Finally, though, we just decided family names were the most important thing. Our girl name is a pretty, international-sounding, easily pronounced name that just happens to be a combination of my mom's name and DH's mom's name. The middle name is after DH's beloved aunt, and has an old-fashioned vibe, which I'm all about.

The boy name - we're still not 100 percent sure. We want to include Charles somewhere in it because DH's grandfather and my grandmother were both named Charlie. But like someone mentioned upthread, there are too many dogs named Charlie! So we'd like something a little less common for a first name.

LOL...we got our cat and named her at the same time some good friends had their daughter and named her the same thing. Not cool!

Natalie's Bmom went to high school with my twin daughters. When she was pregnant the first time (with her parented son), she told my daughter, Sara, that she loved her name and was naming the baby after her if it was a girl. That's funny because I had actually named Sara after a girl that I went to high school with. Anyways, thank goodness that she chose a different name during her second pregnancy (with Natalie) or else we would have had Sara1 and Sara2...or something! LOL!
