Birthmother expenses two years later
We were there when our son was born and he came home with us from the hospital. Due to some Birthfather problems, it took us a year to finalize. Now, a year after finalizing, (our son is two), the birthmother, who has been off the radar for a year, emails us that she is getting bills from the hospital and she wants us to pay them. She was on Medi-cal, and listed in the paperwork that the hospital expenses would be paid. We are not in a position to pay for this, and further, don't know if it is even legal for us to pay, as we are already finalized. What do I do? Looking for any advice. I don't want to be a jerk to birthmom, but also don't want to pay something we don't have to.

I would either contact your agency or an adoption attorney before doing anything.

I would also contact your agency or adoption attorney! However, you SHOULD as the couple pay for co-pays etc. So maybe that is what has happened. Most everyone I have spoken with has to pay some sort of out of pocket medical for the bmom and baby. You could work out a payment plan with whoever the money is owed 2

Definitely contact your agency or attorney. The bulk of expenses should have been paid through Medi-Cal.

Our daughter was born in CA, and even though many of the bills were covered, we had to pay a stand alone bill to the doctor who performed the emergency c-section. No getting around it, we did it in payments. Our daughter was 2 by the time we had a zero balance. Good luck--if the billing is related to the delivery, you may not have a choice. Check with the agency.
