Thanks for responding, Leigh...since I know that you're in the same province as I, I was hoping you'd respond. We're not *planning* on going through a private adoption, but who knows what the future might bring?

Melissa - if you ever do decide to go the private route and have any questions - give me a shout!

I was quite involved in the "adoption world" here, I've spoken at adoption conferences here in town and have had a little bit of experience with most agencies - or I know people who have used them.

I might even consider giving you "accurate" information!!

Hmmm...ever go to anything with FASD involved? If so, you've probably met my BIL!

Well, our adoption conference here in Lethbridge always covers every aspect of adopting. Newborn Infant, International, Special needs, native adoption, LDS adoption, Gov't adoption, and yes, drug and alcohol exposure have been discussed.

Does he live in lethbridge? Is his first name Grant?

Nope, he's in Calgary, but travels all around Canada...he's been in Toronto in the last wk, and seems to me he's headed to Red Deer and/or Lethbridge this week or next...First name is Myles.

Amen to that.

Well, if there's a conference on FASD in your area, go! He'll be the guy who looks all of about 16, dressed up. Seriously, he's 30 something, and wouldn't get a second look at a highschool. I should be so lucky.

For us it's going to be about $25-$30K for private adoption using an adoption lawyer in NY State.

Ours is costing about $25K, including travel and all the little expenses. We could have gone cheaper, but the situation came up, and there were so many entities involved with their hands out (referral service, facilitator, agency in bmom's state, attorney), then the expenses ended up being more than we planned, and we really had no choice but to pay them. Oh well. If there is a next time, we will be patient and wait to go a less expensive route.

I was reading this thread again about non-resident adoption... It's what we did also. We're in PA but adopted in NJ and used NJ laws. It was made easy by the fact that our agency worked in both states though, but it's definitely doable - and legal.

Our first adoption was just about $12K and we couldn't have spent a penny more. Our second, IF you add everything that we spent along the way, including two matches when we flew expectant moms out to meet us, birthmother expenses and a facilitator on top of our agency, was $27K -- at a time we could afford more. Funny how those things work out. susan
