My Fake Baby

Has anyone else seen this documentary?? It was on last night and I swear I spent the entire hour with my jaw hanging open. I was stunned....STUNNED I TELL YOU.

So let me just explain for those who haven't seen....The documentary was on a new fad - women who look after and care for baby dolls. These aren't just any doll tho - they are very expensive very REALISTIC looking baby dolls. Like to the point that you wouldn't be able to tell that they are dolls. Artists make them, and I have to tell you they are amazing.

I understand a grown up woman collecting or just having a few dolls. I loved dolls as a child and still love to see a nice baby doll. I still have some cabbage patch kids....I get that.

However, what I have trouble with is GROWN women walking their baby dolls in expensive strollers, totting around expensive baby bottle holders filled with fake formula and dressing their baby dolls in designer outfits.....it's all a little odd to me.

One lady was on there - she travelled all the way to the U.S. for one of her dolls. THEN after - and I quote - "BONDING" with it for 2 days, discovered a flaw on the back of her head and then was devestated and had to return it. This is the same woman that had no trouble dropping several hundred dollars on a "coming home outfit" for her new "baby" because the fake baby would never soil or outgrow it. She called it money well spent - as opposed to the money spent on an actual baby who would just ruin it and/or outgrow it.

Then there was a lady who was devestated that her grandson moved away with his mom and step-dad to new zealand. SOOO she had a baby made up to look exactly like HIM as a newborn. Then she said "and no one can take THIS one away from me"

I can understand collecting a doll - and I could even see how a woman would think it's really cool to have a baby doll that looks like her child.....but these women are sayinig they like the attention they get walking their babies in their "pram's" because everyone wants to ooooh and ahhhh at a new baby. They like the idea of being a new mom.

I also can completely see the artisitic value of these dolls.....They are AMAZING to see - they look so real. Tho the one lady (the grandson replacer) was quite upset when her hubby said it creeped him out because it looked like something on a mortuary table...

I was at church a few weeks ago, and there was a grandmotherly woman there with her husband...As they were walking out, I noticed she had a babydoll in her arms, diaper bag, etc...

I was nervous because I didn't see her granddaughter with her...When I brought it to her attention, she said "Oh honey, my granddaughter's not with me. You see, she got a new babydoll and decided she didn't really want to play with this one anymore. So I decided to spend some time with "her"...We are going to brunch and then off to buy new outfits after this!" Her husband looked beside himself.

To each his own, I guess...To each his creepy, crazy own...

I am not surprised for some reason. Maybe it was because last week CSI NY had adults with adult dolls that looked real.

I watched it a few weeks ago. I thought the women who got one made like her grandson was doing it because he died. Then it said he had just moved away. I loved it at the end when she was talking to her grandson (webcam) and he kept saying "It is just a doll'. I think he even said " It is just a doll numb nutz"

I had a women come to one of my yard sales years ago with one. She was buying baby clothes and wanted to know if I wanted to see her baby girl. She went to the car and got out a carseat with her "BABY". She kept insisting my daughter touched the baby.

There is a documentary about this too. One guy had like 10 dolls. Another guy would take pictures of him and the dolls and display them. He said it made them more real. The guy who had several dolls also had a real girl friend . When he was going to "introduce" one of his doll to the girl friend he cleaned her with a bottle brush because she was "fishy"

O.K I cant believe I just typed the last sentence.

I came across a website of these realisitc looking dolls when I did a search for "available adoption situations." I was awed by the craftsmanship, but little did I know some of these dolls were being used as "fake" babies. Very interesting...and creepy.

A few of these people were on the news a couple weeks ago and Matt Lauer interviewed them (I think it was him...)

They say it's totally normal - I say - totally bizarre. I mean, the time and care that they put into these dolls is unbelievable! The putting them in carseats and rocking them and clothing them - and these dolls are THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS sometimes!!!

Oh, to have such expendable income - haha!

Forgive me, but I think its a relief that these folks have turned to dolls, rather than attempting to have another child, or adopt. They have the eternal baby, minus the crying, pooping, puking, peeing, teething...

Hang on, maybe they're on to something here....

Honestly, it sounds really narcissistic. All about their needs, (attention, dress up) and not having to actually give anything. Makes me wonder if there wasn't something more to the story about the grandson being moved away

Ok, seriously - these people need to hand over all this disposable income to people who would use it to take care of REAL babies. This is just weird, sad (sorry - how many kids In developing countries die every day due to hunger?)...and very disturbing.

Of course it was Leigh who brought it to our attention - why am I not surprised ya nut-ball

The grandson lived with grandma and grandpa while his mom went through cancer treatment...She actually ASKED for the mom to leave the boy with them when she moved.
