Knee Walking?

I was just wondering when everyone's children started walking on their knees.
DD is barely walking. She's proven she can do it, she basically just doesn't care to. Mostly she crawls or cruises. But in the last few days she's started walking on her knees as well.
I really didn't think much of it until my aunt, who watches her, asked me about it today. She was really surprised that DD is doing this. She just retired after years as an Early On teacher and administrator and says that most kids don't start knee walking until after they learn to walk and are doing so fairly well.
DD has tended to do things a little backward anyway. She was standing independently long before she ever took her first step and started saying "hi" very early, though other words have only recently started to come out.
The conversation this morning has just made me a little curious about everyone else's experiences.

Do you mean she walks across the room on her knees or she'll kind of do a circle (sideways).

E always did the circle thing before he could walk on his knees but it was more like a game.

Nope, I mean she actually goes places. Like last night. She was on her knees bopping away to her sing along when she decided she just had to get her glo worm out of the toy basket. So instead of crawling or cruising, she just knee-walked on over and grabbed her toy.

I have a cousin who knee walked, sort of. She was on her knees, but one foot was to the front of her, and one to the back. It looked awkward as heck, and she did that till almost 2. Same deal. She could walk, and she could crawl, this was just her preference...

My youngest two (bio) did this. They went everywhere on their knees and both were very fast! My husband also was like this as a baby. The girls doctor wasn't worried at all and both did start walking around 18 months and were strong walkers right from the start. Nice to see mine aren't the only ones!!! LOL!

Oddly enough, in the last 24 hours she's really started trying to walk.
She's actually doing really well. She'll walk across the room, back and forth between us, the dogs, etc.
She took her first steps a month and a half ago but hasn't shown one bit of interest in trying to walk as a mode of transportation until the last 48 hours.
Wonder if the two are connected?

DD has almost never knee walked. She did however take her first steps very early and my DH and I were betting she would walk by 9 months. She didn't walk till 10 1/2 months which was 2 1/2 months after her first steps. Anyway, they all progress so differently don't they?

They do! And especially when you've got a pediatrician with a stopwatch and a clipboard looking over your child's shoulder, it can be overwhelming.
But DD has been making some major strides literally and figuratively in the last two weeks. The knee walking and walking are big of course.
But as of last night she's added four new words to her vocabulary in a week. You could've knocked me over with a feather last night when she asked me for a "fiz" (fish).
I've been handing her goldfish crackers and repeating that word for months! Maybe this means there's hope for "thank you?"

Nikki one thing I learned is that (and I'm not exaggerating) the week I notice something's lagging to whatever I focus on it and he'll meet that milestone!

That's why there's no use stressing anymore because it all comes in it's own time although I know EI is great for a lot of kids I just feel like being at home with E I can work with him on most things!

I totally agree. We've switched doctors for DD and her new one is fantastic with her and that helps. When we went for her 18 month checkup they measured her head once, said yep, it's small, and we moved on.
No sirens started wailing or lights flashing and I actually go to speak to the doctor about my real concerns and questions. It was great.
We actually started her in EI last February at the peds suggestion and my request. I thought it would help. Not so much. The teacher only makes it maybe a quarter of the time and when she does she spends most of her time talking and not doing anything with DD.
I find that if I work with her on one thing at a time, we get much further than any other plan the teacher comes up with. So I just smile and nod while she's there and then do my own thing. It seems to be working pretty well.
