How do you switch to Soy Milk

Do you do it all at once or gradually? If he is getting 20 oz cow's milk would it be the same?

I have to try something. His stools are STILL very loose. I added rice to his diet in most of his meals but even that only worked for about a day. I feel it is the milk and if it doesn't improve I'm going to really ask the pdoc to figure this out with me. Until now I don't feel like he's taking the issue very seriously!

I wish I could tell you but DD does fine with cows milk. If it wasn't a possible milk allergy I would suggest cheese as that is supposed to bind some people.

My son has a milk sensitivity (became apparent at 12 months) and we switched him to soy milk immediately, all at once. His issues (rash & diarrhea) cleared up instantly. Good luck!

OK, we have tried giving A. whole milk and his poo gets VERY loose. He has been allergy tested and it was all negative. He has been on a soy follow up formula since he was a year old; we are now in the process of switching him to soy milk. He takes 3 bottles a day; morning, midafternoon, and bedtime. I am giving him two bottles of formula and one of soy milk. After a week or two I will switch to two bottles of soy milk and one of formula etc. I can't figure out what is going on with him; he can tolerate cheese and yogurt, but not the milk!

I don't know how old your baby is, but if he is at least 12 months I would go straight to soy milk.

I hope it helps! My son is almost 5 and he still drinks soy milk, although like someone else mentioned he's fine with ice cream, yogurt, cheese, etc. It's weird.

I haven't posted here in forever but you hit a nerve with this topic. Yes, just make an immediate switch. My doc said that if we were switching down to easier to digest foods it was best to go cold turkey. DS had horrible diarrhea even at 2 years old on soy milk. After doc took me seriously and did some tests, it turned out his iron was low. After a month on an iron supplement and cutting way down on juice, the kid was "cured." I swear the whole thing was just a vicious circle we had to break.

Thanks everyone. He didn't really like the Soy Milk, he only had half the bottle but it was interesting (disclaimer descriptive poop talk to follow)

He always goes right after his bottle. This morning he went and the poop was firmer. Its like he has an INSTANT reaction to the milk! ANd yes it was TOTALLY gross but not watery at all def. a step in the right direction with the soy.

Does this support my theory? I feel like it does! I'm going to give it 3 or 4 days and see what happens. Otherwise CLEARLY there is another issue. I'd be so surprised about the Iron but maybe!

Do you think he may be Lactose intorlerant Storm? Both my mom and I have similar symptoms when we eat cheese and ice cream and we both are.

I don't think it's true intolerance as he was on a mllk based formula his entire first year. (Would this be a correct assumption?)

I feel it is a milk sensitivity rather than intolerance. He's fine with cheese as well.

I'm changing pdocs. I'm not sure if it's me or them but it's not a great partnership. I'm also not great at trusting doctors....and def. want a practice that can draw blood on the premises.

So we shall see

ETA I just read that there is a correlation to TEMPERATURE in these things. More babies have reactions to cold cows milk vs. room temp cow's milk and this happened as soon as we started giving him cold cows milk 2 months ago. I'm going to look into that also. What a pain it will be to warm his mlik every time though! ANyway else find this?

Stormster, my son's reaction to switching from cow's milk to soy milk was so great that I never even looked back at cow's milk.

Also, I don't know what kind of soy milk you're using, but if he doesn't like the taste try some different kinds. My son loves the 8th Continent soy milk, but hates Silk.

Stinky he wouldn't touch the Organic Soy (Natures Best with DHA) so what I did was I warmed some cows milk for now. If that doesn't work I"m going to keep trying with the soy and if he still doesn't like this brand I'll try other brands...

Thank you for all your suggestions and help with this!

Interesting fact - humans are the only species that drink milk beyond the age of infancy. And it's not even our own milk (i.e. human milk). If you eat a balanced diet, milk/dairy is not even necessary. Dark green veggies are packed with calcium and when paired with vitamin C (like a glass of orange juice), it's absorbed better than cow's milk. DD will either have soy milk or organic cow's milk when she's older. I do eat dairy, but try to avoid it because of all the hormones, antibiotics, animal mistreatment, etc. Wish I could afford all organic dairy for DH and I!
