Digestion Problem?
E's number 2's are very loose again. This has always happened on and off but right now he doesn't seem sick. He is teething for sure is it possible that this has something to do with it?
Should I add some more grains like rice cereal to his diet? I give him rice cereal probably 5X a week with his lunch. Should I give him rice in the AM too? He's currently having oatmeal. I'm wondering if there's too much fruit or fructose in his diet? He also has one bottle of juice in the afternoon with his snack. It is the diluted kind with no added sugar but maybe I need to cut that out too? Any advice would be appreciated. There's obviously something not right! BTW I also think he may be having too much cows milk. We try to keep it down but he's probably still getting 24-26 ounces a day. He loves it.

Stormster, I've definitely read (in more than one of my baby books) that teething can cause loose stools. Also, my cousin told me this (she has 2 children).
His diet sounds fine, I've read many of your posts and you take great care in what you feed your DS. A bit O/T, I know you start cow's milk at 1, did you do the switch all at once? Or did you mix w/formula for a while? Are you using organic milk?

You know what it's not organic this week. It usually is though! Peapod doesn't do organic but it did start when he was off organic milk....or maybe the teething too.
Thanks Fe!

Diet sound great, my guess is it is the teething.
You might want to incorprate some yogurt in his diet just to balance things out. As far as cows milk goes, I never gave my kids anything but cows milk. None were lactose intolerant and my pedi sad cows milk was fine and they never had a problem. EZ |

Hi,
I'm a family nurse practitioner, work with lots of little ones. You won't find science to tell you teething gives them loose stools, but it very very much can. I wonder if it has to do with all the extra saliva they are producing when they teethe? His diet sounds good maybe with one small exception. Cow's milk is absolutely fine, but that is kind of a lot. I would keep doing whta you are doing except maybe see if you could get the amount of milk backed down a little bit? Best of luck with him! Michelle

Storm, just saw this so I hope things are better. As for cutting down on the milk, it helped us to take DD off the bottle and to use the sippy cup more. Not sure if E is ready but for DD the pediatrician recommended we do this so she was off the bottle by 13 months. Just a thought.

Didn't you know? Toddlers with bottles is the new black! Just look at Suri Cruise.
Seriously, we put down a sippy cup with water at every meal. He still loves his bottle. And he's still making very messy poops! Switched back to organic milk though curious to see if that helps.

Stormster,
With my little one, juice will give him loose stool. I dilute it with water and that helps. He still gets the same amount of juice, just not all at once. More than likely though, little E is having the stools because he's teething. My kids will have loose stools and a runny nose when teething. Not sure why though! At any rate, I hope he gets better soon. |

Hi Stormster-
Pediatrician here. Do the stools have a foul smell? If not, it sounds like this is probably a SUPER DUPER common problem called Toddler Diarrhea, which starts to occur around the age that babies start to get teeth (hence the old wives tale that teething causes diarrhea) and is diet related. If after you make the diet changes, nothing gets better, I have a couple of suggestions: - Make sure nothing serious is going on with a trip to the dr (they should make sure there is no blood in the stool and no infection). - Increase the fat and fiber in the diet - Continue to not give excess fluids and no fruit juices. I always tell parents to be careful of what you attribute to teething- some discomfort and low grade (less than 100.5 deg F rectal) temperature increase are ok, beyond that there's something else going on (and most likely the other cause is benign (unless the child looks ill or there are other symptoms), but it's not due to teething!!!). Good luck and I hope E is feeling better soon! |

Wow Stromster...you really go the extra mile don't ya'? Aidan emits toxic waste. I'd have to visit the ER twice a day if I took him based on smell alone. The only time I ever heard my d/h "Rev" Adam curse was last week after he volunteered to give Aidan a bath and afterward carried him from the bathroom over to our bed NAKED to dry him off...well Aidan decided it was now or never and that little guy had a LIQUID toxic spill all over the bathroom, on to the beige carpet in our room, his dads shoes and smack dab on Daddy's nightstand and favorite pillow where he nearly dropped him. He even got it all over the cute outfit Daddy was getting ready to dress him in. It did not however get on the hooded towel he'd laid out on the bed to dry him with that I, as the brains in the family, offered to bring him BEFORE HE TOOK HIM OUT. Aidan smiled ...Adam said a phrase he never says! OK, in his defense perhaps I heard wrong and maybe what he actually said was "What The Truck" or "Gut The Duck" or even "Cut The Luck" but I don't think so ...JMOHope your Little Guy is better soon. Ok.... so what does it mean if the loose stool stink so bad you want to vomit & have since the day sh was born? I have IBS and have all kinds of issues, I just assumed that my dd was similar. I recently got a "your child at 38 months" newsletter and it said that loose stools could be a sign of a milk allergy. My dh and I then put our dd on soy milk. It has helped some, but not a lot. She is 20 months, her stools have been loose & stinky her whole life and she gets really sever diaper rashes very easily. I think I should call the ped. I never would have thought it could be allergy related until I got that email......
