Good afternoon/evening everyone.

I am your Political Thread Joy Stomper. Nice to meet you.

I need to take a few minutes to chat about some rules/guidelines that, in the spirit if 'friendship', we should all try really hard to follow on this (and any other thread) regarding the "P" word.

Some of you haven't been around long enough to be a part of the elections four years ago...but a thread, very similar to this one, was created and what resulted was nasty bashing, clique'ish attacking and overall unpleasantness. We need to remember, regardless of our political affiliation, we're all here for a reason (whatever that might be). Please, take a few minutes to consider how your words will impact others. Simply because a few people might get a rise out of whatever catty remark you might make with regards to (insert certain political or potential political figure here) - that doesn't mean everyone will. It doesn't mean you should quash your opinions - it simply means you need to be kind/respectful in their delivery.

There are a number of topics, which I am happy to laundry list out for you if you'd like, that are SURE (I don't care how hard we try) to turn ugly...very ugly. This is one of them.

There is a huge potential for hurt feelings here...so just be a little extra cautious, if you would.

Thanks everyone - I know we can make this thread (and all the other threads) about politics a great place for spirited exchange and healthy debate...

aclee, easy on the PD comments. my sister was a PD out of law school and she worked her TAIL OFF for her clients. i would have taken her as my attorney any day of the week!!!

(ETA - i know i am sensitive, but i hate it that people think PDs aren't good. most are really good. many are fresh out of law school and beyond eager to work hard for their client(s). their initial trial work is very important. i remember working day and night (wayyyy past what she was getting paid for) to do her best for every client.)

Yes, there are a lot of us. And now that we appear to be entering a global cooling cycle - compounded by the first month in 100 years with no sun spots, I am looking forward to the new spin on how humans are responsible. Perhaps we will be told to drive our cars a lot more to keep the earth temperature from dropping!

Stormster, I do not think Christians are pro-death penalty, I think most are against it. I am like another poster, I used to be for it because I did not like supporting these people in jail. Then I heard it was more expensive to execute them, with all the legal wranglings, so heck, let them rot in prison. OK, not the most Christian part of my personality, but I am not perfect.

Well, he did say she looked great for someone who had 5 kids! But seriously, when I got home on Friday, he was so excited. He was telling me all her positions on stuff & about her being a hunter (he loves hunting) & how he thought she was a great choice.

There is a right way, and a wrong way to do all things and this is definately the wrong way to teach a child about sex. It is a planned parenthood video called "take care down there". It tells the kids what to do AFTER they get an std, it promotes casual sex, group sex and homosexuality. And really, what is wrong with abstinence. I think it is a bit crazy to have to feel stupid for supporting something that statistics prove is the best choice. Experience with sexual behavior does not make for better marriages. It causes problems in marriages such as jealousy, stds, hpv, etc. In fact lots of fertility issues are caused by having sex with multiple partners.
i realize I have strayed from the op's topic. I do feel sorry for any 17 year old that ends up pregnant. As a parent of 3 grown sons, and 16 and 7 year old daughters I have pretty much experience with bad choices kids make. I find I have become much less judgemental of parents because I realize my kids may do things that will not make me "look" like a good parent. I always say this: "my job is to teach my children right from wrong and then realize they will go on and make their own mistakes" At least when one of my children make a bad choice I know they did it knowing it they were doing wrong. That is my job as a parent. What they choose to do I cannot control. But I still love them even when they make bad choices and I have learned that good things can come of bad choices. I pray that is what can be said about that 17 year old girl that is pregnant.

I will pm my thoughts to you....

He's a child not a man. She is girlfriend NOT his wife. She is a child! They had sex out of marriage. SIN! If we're playing by their rules lets call it for what it is.

The poor CHILD'S mother put her in the public spot light.

Well if this is just the natural cycle why would we do anything to stop it? It's not our fault

I'm a christian and I don't believe in the death penalty. 1st -because there is always the possibility that the person is innocent. Look at all the people who leave jail after serving years and years of their sentence due to dna evidence which clears their name.
2nd- To me, death isn't a punishment. I'm going to die (someday). I've never killed or raped anyone-but I'm still going to die. You're going to die. Our children are going to die. Innocent people die all the time. Guilty people should have to live with what they've done. I'd rather see someone 'punished' by spending 50 years in a small prison cell reflecting on the choices they made than executed and have their life over.

If I was running this country, I'd convert two of the islands of Hawaii into prison islands. It would be like that old movie from the 70's or 80's. All prisoners-no guards. Well, there would be guards but they would be patrolling the island in boats to make sure no one leaves. The people can do whatever they want. Build a shelter, grow some food, kick the crap out of one another..but they would be completely and forever banished to that island. No cable tv. No sports equipment. No 'visits' from family. Just total banishment from society. This would only be for the hardened criminals-people who would otherwise be spending life in jail. It would be a deterrent because they wouldn't have the protection and benefits of a regular jail. And if they aren't deterred, and still commit heinous crimes, they should probably be removed from society anyway.

THERE ARE EIGHT DIFFERENT WAYS YOUR CHILD CAN DIE ON A CORDED WINDOW TREATMENT
Read "How Safe Cords Kill" at www.pfwbs.org

THREE CHILDREN HAVE STRANGLED TO DEATH SINCE ANGEL DIED ON 8/11/09.
Brandyn Coppedge died on 9/11/09. Rosie Smith died on 9/30/09 and Thapelo Kwofie died on 11/1/09. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is no longer recommending safety kits. They are now recommending that anywhere children live or visit should be free of corded window products.
