Finalization question...

Apparently, my last fingerprint card wasn't readable... I did it three months ago, and we just got the word. Needless to say, I'm mad. At least they should hurry it up, but still...

Hence my question... We adopted in NJ. Does anyone know if you can file the paperwork 6 months after the birth date, or 6 months after TPR was signed? And do you know if all clearances need to be current for filing or for the court date?

I'm still really hoping that we can finalize this year, so I hope it doesn't delay things too much...

6 months after bday for us. Of course we had to have 4 post placement visits in before they would file and also had to have finger prints redone too. Our issue with with the FBI prints. If you need any guidance on pushing prints through let me know.

Our worker said that in MA, everything only had to be current when you filed in court...if court took a year to get you a date, you didn't have to update, as long as everything in the HS was current when it was filed.

Speaking of which, I have to e-mail some info...thanks for reminding me

Fran,

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I'm sorry you're having delays. I remember you posting about another problem recently. It must be so frustrating when you just want things to be finished so you can go on with your lives without court dates and legal processes.

BTW, we've had problems with fingerprints too. My dad had his done twice so that he can babysit Daniel and they both came back unreadable. I was told that the police department generally has the best machines for fingerprinting. It worked for us. Just FYI in case you need to have yours redone.

I'm sorry about your fingerprinting delay. I hope you can get a new set of prints processed quickly. Our agency gave me some verbiage to include on the package sent to the FBI in order to expedite the process. Not sure if that would be helpful to you or not, but feel free to PM me if you'd like the info.

We also had fingerprinting issues when we were doing our HS. My parents live with us in a separate apt that is attached to our house so they had to be included in the HS and clearances. Mom's prints went through the state clearance fine but she had to be printed three times for the FBI and they rejected all three sets as unreadable. The social worker finally just put in the HS that her prints weren't readable for FBI clearance purposes. I'm sure the same thing will happen again if we ever get a court date. It's very frustrating.

The State Police has a laser reader for prints, but they wouldn't let us take our fingerprints over there, as we don't live in the same township, so we had to go to the local police station (which only does it on Thursday... at least I got lucky to get the new card today!), and they just use ink. So now I can just hope that they will be readable this time. Ugh.

For me it's not the FBI, but the NJ police apparently. The FBI just checked my name in the records (dh's cards were fine). So I'm not even sure they can get those done faster...

Either way, I hope it's the same for NJ and it just needs to be up to date for the court date. And that hopefully they filed everything on Monday for their 6th month... as TPR was signed over two weeks later.

Thanks a ton for the replies, all I can do now is go back tomorrow, send the cards again, and wait...

Fran, good luck!! I know where I live there is a "six month" requirement (though not sure if it is from birth or TPR...in our case it was negligible). I had to fight tooth and nail with our agency to get the final report done, then arrange our own court date (I had some connections), etc. We really, really needed the credit desperately so I hope you can get this done asap. I honestly knew so little about the pre finalization status we were in (just wanted it done for tax purposes), so I am so glad that we pushed hard for finalization asap. I'm sorry the fingerprinting got screwed up. GOOD LUCK!!!

i am in NJ and going thru my HS now. we just got fingerprinted. we did it at SAGEM MORPHO. our SW told us we couldnt do it at the police station. You can look up Sagem Morpho on line. They do it digitally. Seemed to be ok.
good luck.

Yeah we went through sagem morpho in Cherry Hill the first time two years ago, but now with the babies it would be a real pain for us, as it's 40 minutes away and last time we couldn't get appointments for 3 weeks.

In our state you can finalize 6 months after the child was placed with you, of course this has to be after TPR.
