What does OBGYN have to be ready to do?
Hi. We're starting a domestic adoption and i've been told that we have to have an OBGYN on standby ready to look at a birth mom's medical records. Do you know what specifically I have to tell my OBGYN they will be required to do and with what kind of turn around time??
Thanks! |

I'm not sure why you need an OB-GYN on standby, this is not something we did with our adoption. I guess your OB-GYN would just look over her medicals and make sure it all looks good, her health as well as the babies.

I have never heard of this. Not here, from any agencies we talked to, or in any books we read.
That being said, if you were presented with a particular situation where the bmom had a medical history that was concerning to you, or had complications, you might want to confer with your own OBGYN. May I ask who suggested this to you? Was it an agency or an attorney? |

We had a family member who is a doctor take a quick look at the basic medical report but they are usually very straight forward.

No clue. We didn't have one on standby and never consulted with one.

I'm curious who told you that?
I would have refused to match with a couple that was going to be running around with my medical records. I had a doctor, that's all that was important.

Apparently Hot Wheels wallpapper is the way to go. 2-16-2009 I got a promotion, that comes with a raise. Mom and Dad are visiting and we're going to Al's for pie to celebrate. 4-27-2009 Dad surprises me with a Lady Ugly Stick (an awesome fishing rod that is pink) and a 2nd Iowa Light Artillery Battery jacket. I'm a lucky girl! 5-30-2009 Kiddo turns five. It is hard to believe he is that old already, it seems like just yesterday he was being born. I was at peace for the first time on his birthday, what a nice feeling. 6-13&14 2009 A cannon live fire in Casper WY. We got third place and I got to see Devil's Tower for the first time, it was pretty awesome. 7-4-2009 Amelia the kitten comes to live with me and Liz. Talk about jealousy, Liz will adjust though. |

No clue here, either. Having your pediatrician all planned and signed up, yes -- but an OB/GYN, never heard of that request. susan

As abirthmom I would have been horrified if the adopting parents were trying to get my medical records for their doctor to check over. It reminds me too much of buying a horse...checking it's teeth. I can understand wanting information on the pregnancy and birth, but if the expectant/new mom says there were no complications you should let it go.

With all due respect sometimes there are abnormal results in ultrasounds that PAPs want to know how to interpret because it effects on how we can best care for the child (and sometimes as in our case at the request of the EM who was worried too!)

If the pbmom is coming to your state to have the baby I could maybe see having your ob/gyn around and the need for that doctor to have the medical records, but medical records are private and and that pbmom should only share with you what she feels she should. Think of it this way, would you want her to read your medical record? Working in the field I work in for DCF I have my teen/single pregnant moms sign a release (they have too) so that I can review all medical records so that my files are up todate and the clients get the best care and or services needed, also allows me to be at the hospital for birth, but I still have to wear my ID at all times and even than I have some doctors that want to see that release everytime.
