I don't know - maybe I was supposed to wait. I think Daniel is just a couple of weeks older than Ty - he was born on Jan. 7th I thought I had done a lot of reading about infant nutrition - especially since we are vegetarians - but no one told me that those types of vegetables were a bad idea. What was the reason you were given?

Daniel certainly hasn't had any issues with broccoli, cauliflower or eggplant so far (I do take the skin off though) and he's been getting them for a month or so. He just prefers them mixed with other, sweeter veggies like squash or carrots. I do limit the carrots I serve him from home because of the nitrites. He LOVES carrots though so I'll sometimes buy them for him - but I don't like buying baby food. Not just nutritionally - I hate all those little plastic containers.

The Dr said we could try them but get few babies can tolerate them before 9 months. They don't have the stomach acid to break them down yet. I'm gonna try them. How do you cook the broccoli and cauliflower? You think I could try those mixed together or should I do it seperate first? I have some beautiful eggplant and now I can't wait to cook it. I've done that in balsamic and olive oil on the grill for myself before, but not for Ty...I can roast that? Cut in pieces or slices? What seasonings do you use?

I'm picturing just breaking out a bunch of our corningware (can I roast in that?) and putting different veggies in each one and sprinkling some fresh herbs on them and putting all the pans in the oven

I would really like to expand Ty's palet as much as possible. His dad likes everything, I like almost everything and we do a lot of cooking...it will be so tough if Ty is a picky eater. I want him eatting sushi (ok california rolls and eel only) at 2!

In first grade, we have this math graphing activity where the kids have to ask a certain number of friends about favorite foods and then graph the results. I was really surprised by the number of kids who said Sushi! It was almost as many as those who said pizza. (Almost.)

I usually just roast the vegetables on a baking sheet (but I don't see why corningware wouldn't work) with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar for him. He's able to pick up finger foods now and he definitely prefers that to being spoon fed so I just cut them into small pieces and make sure that the pieces are soft enough to be easily mashable. I also take the skins off of the summer squash because he seems to have a harder time dealing with that. I roast the eggplant for myself - I love it in veggie wraps with hummus and some cabbage slaw - and then just cut some of it into small pieces for him.

Broccoli and cauliflower I steam or saute until they are soft - but I do mince them in a food processor before he eats those. And I also peel the broccoli stems. They are related plants - but I would probably introduce them separately first until you're sure they won't give Ty a tummy-ache. I never heard about the stomach acid. Thank goodness Daniel seems to have a strong stomach!

Ty isn't really doing very well with finger foods. I hate to say it, but he's kinda a lazy baby. He will push the puff around on his tray and it sort of keeps him busy while I get the rest of his food ready, and then as soon as he sees me coming, he just sits back and opens his mouth. Sometimes I will lick his fingers, and then the puff stick, so he gets them easier. I should try letting him have a go at some veggies though. The dogs do clean up on anything he drops, so I don't have to worry about the mess

We have stomach ISSUES...so I took what she said seriously. I might hold off..I'll try the egg plant though. Dh is really into reading the book while I make the food. When I put the food in freezer bags, he has me label how old he needs to be before he can eat it. He's so afraid to do it "wrong" I didn't make him like that I swear!

I got the vanilla flavor and figure I can add a little fruit and cereal to it. I'm thinking about starting with banana since that is his favorite, and adding the banana rice cereal too.

I hope it goes well. Dh and I are big yogurt eaters, so it would be nice to get to the point where I knew I could make it and we would all eat it for breakfasts...

Well since this IS a thread about making your own....maybe I should just backpeddle right on out of here!

I think that's very cute!

Ah - babies do things at different ages. Daniel walked around holding onto our hands before he rolled over. Go figure. Sometimes I wish kiddo would just sit back and open his mouth! He wants to do it himself - including the spoon - which usually means a fair amount of cereal or veggies on his lap, on the floor and in his hair. I want a dog! Our cat is completely unhelpful.

That's right - you have had stomach issues, haven't you? In your shoes, I think I would wait too. We were blessed with a baby that seems to have no stomach issues now that the reflux is behind us. I don't miss that!

We've found this table helpful, especially since DD had feeding problems in the recent past:

kellymom.com :: Calorie and fat content of common baby & toddler foods

I'm sure there are other sources on the web, but I liked this table's breakdown into calories and fat content per ounce. It's made us emphasize some foods like avocado (which we'll be trying this weekend), and de-emphasize others (carrots) unless mixed with cereal. DD will still get all the foods, though.

HOLY TOLEDO! How do the baby food companies take all the fat out? You look and the whole cooked foods have fat, but it's gone in the comercial baby food, or WAY reduced.

Ty loved avacado...going down, and coming up. So far...it looks like it stains.

Tonight I made him Pears (raw), and I roasted: 2 sweet Potatoes, a large zucchini, a patti pan squash, and 4 eggplant (2 purple, 2 white...some for DH and I too thought) I didn't get to the green beans or the apples, but that should last him a while I ended up pureeing the eggplant and straining it. It was SO good.
