I read the The Shack. I liked the plot behind it, but sometimes felt it was much too wordy. It was a good book to make you think though!

I recently read The Memory Keepers Daughter. I saw that it is now a movie so it reminded me that it was one I wanted to read. I really liked it and it flowed really well.

I of course always love Nicholas Sparks for easy reading Also, Marley and Me was REALLY good (thankfully a friend lent it to me or else I never would have read it on my own). I also love Mitch Album (sp?)-Tuesdays with Morrie, 5 people you meet in Heaven and One last day, but make sure you have tons of tissues!!!

I love this discussion I am always looking for good books! I am getting ready to read The Time Travelers Wife. I do not know anything about it-has anyone read it?

My all time favorite book is After Anne by Roxanne Henke. It is about the relationship of two women...and it's not done in chapters, but it goes back and forth between the two main characters telling the story through their eyes. It is a Christian fiction...but it goes WAY beyond that. I think it is a must read for anyone who has friends. I have read it at least ten times...and I cry harder each time. It is part of a series by the author...but it's the first in the series and could very easily be the last. The series isn't just about the two main characters, but other people in the town. I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!!

I feel like I never read much other than "Cat in the Hat" and "Pinkalicous" and it's soul-searching sequel "Purpilicous"!

But Here's what My Book Club has read lately (with a Mini-Suzy-Synopsis). Just a disclaimer this is a church book club so the books sort of pass a "clean" test (not a lot of swearing, smut, or violence)

1. PoisonWood Bible - I couldn't read this one cuz I could tell after the first 7 pages they lost a child and I have a hard time with that kind of stuff.

2. Molokai - About a young Hawain Girl and the Leper Colonies - I know it sounds awful but it was a Great book I loved it.

3. The Thirteenth Tale - A mystery kind of. It was a really good book but I'm not sure I liked it (if that makes sense).

4. The Traveler's Gift - Sort of Self-Help Fiction. The main charactar meets Ann Frank, Abe Lincoln and other important historical figures and each one gives him a gift and a theme.

I also read the "Memory Keepers Daughter" another great book but not a good book for me (the heart defect stuff was a little hard for me to read). I also love Mitch Albums books. If you want "fluff" reading I liked "The Devil Wears Prada" and the "Nanny Diaries".

I guess after reading this thread I should try "Pillars of the Earth", and "The Time Travelers Wife" I have those as well as about 6 others ("Love in the Time of Cholera", "Secret Life of Bees", "Kite Runner," "Three Cups of Tea" and "The Last Lecture") in a stack on my night-stand. I keep buying all these smart, well-recommended books.... I guess I actually need to read them

Jodi Picoult
The Mists of Avalon is good, trying to find the time to read the book that takes place before it.

Oh The Secret Life of Bees is a good one, I just finished it. I haven't read the Kite Runner, I have it here, but his second book A Thousand Splendid Suns was fantastic.

Someone was asking of anyone had read The Time Traveller's Wife - I have. I really liked it actually. It is NOT a sci-fi and is much more a love story. It was a really good book.

I just started The Thirteenth Tale - I've been eyeing it for a while and then saw it on my stepmom's bookshelf in June and borrowed it.

Starts out bizarre, easiest way to say it but enjoyed it.

Tara - You'll have to let me know what you think of the Thirteenth Tale - It was one of those that I couldn't put down once I got into it and when I got to the end I loved it. Maybe we could have our own "book club discussion" .

I'm going to have to start "The Time Traveler's Wife" (again) and Secret Life of Bees. My cousin and my really good friend both told me Time Traveler's Wife was their favorite book. I've picked it up a couple of times but haven't been able to get into it.

BrockBaby - I think I'll try to get After Anne this weekend. (What the heck - one more book on the night stand. At some point I am going to have to stop buying and start reading ).

I LOVED Time Traveler's Wife - but warning, I cried like crazy at the end. Bonus - the movie is coming out at the end of the year! I can't wait!

Here are some stuff my book club read recently:

1. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen - what can I say? This was about the 20th time I'd read it, and it still rocks. Run out and read it NOW if you never have!
2. American Gods, Neil Gaiman - Fun, different, interesting sci-fi. He's a really great author.
3. The Stolen Child, Keith Donohue - Interesting premise (following the lives of a boy and the "changeling" that took his place"), but poor follow through, in my opinion.
4. Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro - Really interesting dystopic kinda-sci-fi troubling book. Good read, GREAT book group
conversation.
5. Year of Magical Thinking, Joan Didion - Since I lost my dad recently, this was an intense read.

And finally, since we are NOT a church group book:

6. How to Make Love like a Porn Star, the autobiography of Jenna Jameson. - Putting aside the whole part where it's about the porn industry, this may in fact the worst book ever written. . .

Next up, Shogun, which I haven't read since I was 13!! HOW I'm going to get through all 1,000 pages I have no idea!!!

time travelers wife is fantastic but people either LOVE it or hate. I have never met anyone who just thought it was ok.
I totally agree with:
eat, pray love - it was amazing!
the red tent by anita diamant
anything by phillipa gregory (the other boylen girl etc)
daughter of fortune & portraits in sepia by isabel allende
zorro (also by isabel allende)
the kite runner & a thousand splendid suns are amazing
the bookseller of kabul
three cup of tea was boring to me
books by Dan Brown are very formulaic but still keep me intgrigued when I am in the mood for a mystery
pillars of the earth was amazing but that book is as big a phone book. I cant wait for the sequel to be out in paperback.

I am so happy to hear that people liked Time Travelers Wife...I will probably start it tonight-I definitely need to get it done by the time the movie comes out

Also, someone mentioned Love in the Time of Cholera-I loved that book. It was so beautifully written! I know that is also a movie, but I have yet to see it.

My tastes are a shade eclectic. Here's some of what I've read in the last month.

1. The Last Oracle by James Rollins. I love, love, love this author. Think Indiana Jones. The only book of his I'd stay away from is Deep Fathom. Anything else is a great read.

2. So You Want to be a Wizard by Diane Duane. These are teen books as well but boy do I like them. As a matter of fact this is probably the 15th time or so I've restarted the series.

3. Lover's Bite by Maggie Shayne. Sci Fi romance series. I'm not big into the romance stuff but I like this series a lot.

4. Pacific Vortex by Clive Cussler. Sometimes he's a tad too much of a guy but the history and adventure in his books are always fun.

5. John Adams by David McCullough. Sucker for history and book nerd thanks!

Maybe we could have our own "book club discussion" .

We did that once with an adoption book. Primal Wound in the adoptee section...but I think it would be great to have a little book club discussion on some fiction works!! Something a little bit "lighter"....

Right now I'm reading East of Eden by Steinbeck and Alibi Man by Tami Hoag. Next up is Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich. I also just picked up 3 Dean Koontz novels for two bucks apiece. They are hardcover.

I need to borrow John Adams from one of my work friends, I've heard it was great.

5-30-2009 Kiddo turns five. It is hard to believe he is that old already, it seems like just yesterday he was being born. I was at peace for the first time on his birthday, what a nice feeling.
6-13&14 2009 A cannon live fire in Casper WY. We got third place and I got to see Devil's Tower for the first time, it was pretty awesome.
7-4-2009 Amelia the kitten comes to live with me and Liz. Talk about jealousy, Liz will adjust though.
