Jekyll/Hyde personality in my Joshie
My Joshie is a pretty laid back kid he's 13 mos. now and is walking. But he is going through some weird phase. I will be holding him and he will slap my face, pinch me with his fingernails just as hard as he can, and bite me mostly on my legs. So far the only thing I've done is say "no,no" in a very stern voice. His reaction? He laughs at me and continues doing it.
What do I do about it? Blessings, Michelle P.S. He will also sit on his knees and bounce up and down and flail his arms around when something goes the way he doesn't want it to...tantrum like.

Sounds fairly familiar except DD doesn't hit. She pulls hair and has just started biting.
We tried telling her no very firmly and looking her in the eye when she was trying to yank my hair out of my head. She too thought that was very funny and part of the game. So I started giving her one chance. I would tell her no and remove her hand from my hair. If she did it again, I would simply put her down and walk away. THAT got her attention. She didn't like it, but the hair pulling incidents are down to one or two a day so it's working. The biting is fairly new but the hair pulling treatment seems to be working. I just move her away from my leg (she goes for the knees) and sit her down on the floor. She's now started "fake biting" complete with chomping sound, lol. As for the trantruming.......yep. Eve's not a flailer, but she can make the tears flow, the lower lip tremble and throw herself down in a pathetic little heap with the best of 'em. We ignore it (aren't we bad?) and she usually gets bored and stops. If not it's time for a nap. |

I know, it's like trying to ignore the 2 ton gorilla in the room.
But just last night when DD was on my lap I felt that little hand in my hair and I just looked at her and told her no, she knows she's not supposed to pull and she let go. It was sort of like, oh that's what I'm supposed to do when you tell me no. OK. And then she was off on other business. I have to tell you though, I could've taken it one more week and had she kept going I was shaving my head. Seriously, hair pulling hurts! |

DD is now 17+ months and is finally down to pulling or biting only once a week. I just wanted to interject that they do grow out of it. DD would only hit or bite me so the No and looking in the eye worked best. That plus there were a few times I couldn't help but scream Ouch because it really hurt. That got her attention too.
Good luck. |
