Anyone know of a good free or inexpensive site that offers web hosting? I'd love to have a site for the kids where family can see pictures and get updates ... the free sites that I've found are either too cumbersome or have too little capacity.

Well, I use myspace, and so far, I have over 80 pictures on it, and no problems.

I also have a blog on it, and I love the fact you can have it set up to privacy protected...so only those you approve can become your friends and see the updates.

I think we paid like $30something for our totsite. You can pay more if you need more picture room. Just take a look at ours and see if that is kinda what you are looking for...they have a whole bunch of designs and backgrounds to choose from; anyway, we are very happy with them.

For $5/month you can get your own domain name, 50 email addresses, full set of web tools.

You can use one of these free sites but you will have no control over how your website is indexed and you won't be able to look at any statistics. I can look through the weblogs for my site and determine exactly what link they clicked or search terms they used and what IP address they came from.

However for a family site I would recommend one that has password protection.

I had my own site created by GoDaddy.com and they helped me get wordpress for blogging. Wordpress lets you password protect blog entries or pages so that only those you want to see can view the entry. I think I paid around $125 or so for 5 years.

Godaddy.com for domain registrar. I don't like their hosting at all.

Dreamhost.com for hosting...$119.00 a year and you can host as many domains as you'd like.

They also offer one click install of Wordpress (and other softwares) and they are very easy to use.

I have about 40 domains hosted with them - on one account. Most hosts don't allow multiple domain hosting per account - so it's a great option, if you plan on having multiple sites (one for family, one for friends, one for dog walkers...whatever).

I'll chime in here as well. I use Net1Plus. They run 9.95 a month for their basic package which is quite substantial. I've used them for the last couple of websites that I needed hosting for including Katie's current website.
