OT - tummy sleeping
DD has just started rolling to her tummy tonight... she used to sleep on her side a bit, but I found her twice on her tummy so far... I put her back on her back and she keeps rolling back. She's on her side for now...
Is there anything I can do? I'm such a worry-wart. I have those angelcare monitors so I'm a bit more at ease but still (doesn't help that she's always moving out of range of the sensor too). |

Don't worry about it. If they have the strength to roll themselves over they are usually strong enough to protect their own airway. Besides, the only other alternative is to stay up all night and keep putting them on their back. They won't stay there and you'll get really really tired. Your babies are growing up!

If she is old enough (and has the strength/ability) to roll on her own on to her tummy then they are okay to sleep on thier back. That is what my doctors have always told me anyway...

I freaked out when my I first found my dd on her belly. I did use wedgies as long as I could, but once she got out of those I kind of realized she can roll back over if she got face down.

Yeah she can't quite roll back to her back at will yet, so I'm expecting some screaming at some point, lol.

That's why you got those fancy monitors!

Ditto what Ed said
Ty is a belly sleeper now too. In his bassinet, once he rolls over, he has a hard time rolling back, so he just yells at us. He can hold his head way up just fine though.
In fact if we put him down in a cloth diaper, he has a harder time rolling onto his tummy, so he doesn't sleep as well.

Gotta admit that DD is also belly sleeper. Her ped said once she rolls over, there is not much you can do about it. BUT, let me tell you that she sleeps so much better now!

Once they are able to roll over it's OK to let them sleep on thier tummies. My son liked to sleep on his tummy with his butt sticking up in the air. We had a onsie with a football on the butt and it looked so cute when he was sleeping.

I had that same fear with my twins. I was staying up all night just to put them back on their backs! Looking back, I guess that might have been a bit crazy. Our daughter is a belly sleeper and we tried flipping her over a few times, but it's just how she sleeps. I have been told as long as they have the strength to roll then they have the strength to pick their head up or move if they weren't getting air. The biggest things would be, taking the crib pad out if you haven't. One of my twins stopped breathing (hence, my fear) due to sticking his face between the mattress and crib pad. Also, of course, no stuffed animals or thick blankets that could suffocate.

I agree with Adopted-B-4. I freaked out when one of my twins wouldn't stay on his back while sleeping, and even called my pediatrician about it. She said the same as everyone else here. Don't worry about it, as long as you take EVERYTHING out of the crib (bumper pads, positioner, blankets, etc) so that she can't roll onto them and block her airway.

We never had anything in the crib in the first place. We actually put the bumpers on yesterday because they were starting to get their feet stuck between the slats, but it's the breathable ones, so it's not really a worry.

I understand the freak out factor-my guy started doing it at 2 weeks old, so I was really freaked out. But, after seeing him roll over for herself, the pediatrician told me to just let it go because no matter how long I stayed up and kept rolling him back over, if he wants to and physically can, he'll just keep getting back on his tummy. So, Ben sleeps on his tummy in his crib and has for over two months already! The motion sensor part of the monitor we bought actually ends up getting turned off almost every night because Ben always sets it off by scooting way up in the very corner of the crib.
