Anyone ever heard of being allergic to mosquito bites?

Joshie has had 4 bites total so far, 3 on his face, 1 on his foot and they all swelled up huge and had a head on them like a blister. Is it possible he is allergic? And if so, what if anything, could I put on them? I plan to bring this up at his next pedi appt. the 23rd. They don't seem to itch; he doesn't scratch at them but they look just awful. Anyone else's child here with the same thing?

Blessings, Michelle

my child isn't, but a friend's is. She gives her little girl Benadryl, Motrin and hydrocortisone cream. Hope this may help!

Michelle, yes, I'm allergic to some types of mosquitoes. If I get a bite on the face, especially near my eyes, it swells up like you wouldn't believe. My first allergic reaction was when I was 10 years old, living in Brigham City, Utah, while my stepdad was in Vietnam. The pediatrician gave me a couple shots...I think they were Benadryl and Epinephrine.

I've never had the same severe reaction that I used to get as a child in Utah. An ER doc once explained to me that mosquito allergies are regional. In other words, the mosquitoes in Utah aren't the same exact breed as the mosquitoes in California.

The mosquitoes here in California mainly leave ugly red lumps on me that hurt like the dickons for a while. But my throat doesn't tighten up like it used to in Utah. The big swelling usually just happens if I get bit on my face.

What helps me the most is immediately applying hydrocortisone cream (maximum strength), along with my Benadryl Itch Relief Stick.

Oh, I forgot... We use a medicine called StingEze. It's in a little yellow bottle with green writing. It stops the itch immediately... Wonderful product. Keep it with me all the time.

My Godson is 8 and he is allergic to mosquito bites. His mom uses Benadryl spray on the bites. We try to put bug guard on him before he goes out. Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard for kids is wonderful, it also has a sun block in it and comes in cream and spray formulas.

Actually we are all kind of allergic to them which is why we itch and at least get a small red, raised bump. But younger kids and some more sensitive to them like my little guy get huge red welts with big white rings around them. Luckily he doesn't scratch at them.....yet.

We also do Benadryl and I have found some aloe gel that we typically put on sunburns seem to take the redness out of his making them not look so large and irritated.

Like Kim said, everybody is allergic to mosquito and other insect bites. Some of us are just more sensitive than others and some of us are more prone to bites than others. I live in a old sugar cane field town in Hawai'i and we have all sort of biting mosquitoes and critters. I am most sensitive to what we call zebra mosquitoes (also referred to as tiger mosquitoes)...these suckers are constantly biting me (these even bypass Devin and the dogs to bite me) leaving HUGE ITCHY welts! I use hydrocortisone cream and Claritin. Works like magic!!!

I hope Joshie gets some relief soon!

DD gets those same blistery bumps with white heads. She had one right in the middle of her forehead for almost a week. It looked like we painted a bullseye on her.
This summer is really her first exposure to mosquitoes and I'm hoping that it will get better with further exposure. The little suckers are swarming around here right now so there's no way NOT to expose her really.
In the meantime hydrocortisone cream, Benadryl and bug spray.

Yes, my 6yo DS has always been like this. The bites swell up HUGE. I just give him some benadryl as soon as I notice the bite and the swelling goes away quickly. I remember asking the ped about this a few years ago, and the doctor said that its not really an allergy, but a sensitivity that would lessen in time. I do think his reactions have decreased, but its still quite obvious.

I'm 31 and STILL react like that to most mosquito bites. They will swell and sometimes blister, and the swollen area is huge and rock hard and it actually radiates pain down my arm/leg/wherever I got bit. I just kind of tolerate it now with hyrdocortisone cream (I don't like how Benadryl makes me feel), but my mom used to give me some sort of Rx from the Dr - a NASTY tasting green medicine, but I have no idea what it was.

This happened to my nephew as well and it turned out he had Kawasaki's Disease (not to alarm you, but maybe you could get Joshie checked for that). Poor boo!

YES! I posted a few weeks ago about Castle's ear being really swollen and hot and DH taking her to the doctor to see what was wrong. It turned out that she is unusually allergic to them but nothing really happens other than larger than usually bites and redness around the bite.

Someone at work was just telling me that her friends child was allergic to them. I guess she got a bite on her hand and the whole thing swelled right up...

Thanks everyone...the ones on his face and forehead are almost gone, but he has a huge welty one on the top of his foot...it is in the shape of a rectangle and has that dot thingie in the middle. I have Cortaid here, but no Benadryl...I know Joshie isn't bio, but Benadryl makes my heart palpitate, so I will try to get by with the cream Benadryl instead. Thanks again everyone!

Blessings, Michelle
