What should a one yr old being saying???
Our girls were both VERY verbable and it was so long ago that they were this age!! A is delayed and I am just trying to get an idea of what most 1 year olds say. He says dada, but that is it. He just start clapping a couple of weeks ago. He does not point or wave. On the survey I filled out for his therapy they said he should be saying dada, mama, and one additional word.

Our DD is just 15 months and is also delayed (they say by about three months give or take).
I can tell you that right now, she's saying dad, hi/hello and a few "maybe" words like pretty, twinkle and baby. She's been waving for about four months and just started pointing in the last couple of weeks. |

Z is saying - mama, bye-bye, cracker, bird, and tries to say belt buckle. She is better at getting her points across with signing still.

Three words is what the dr told us one year old check up. I don't think my daughter was pointing then, but she has been clapping since 7 months. And the three words, she may be saing them and it is hard to understand , but that counts.

Our DD is 15 months as well and was very delayed on clapping and pointing. She is just really started saying words within the last month or so and is now up to about 15 words. From what I have read in the month to month toddler years books, toddlers tend to concentrate on one skill at a time. So while your little one is learning to say, point or clap, they are concentrating so much they may forget to talk if they were talking. I hope this helps.

My foster babe just turned 14 months. She spoke her first word at 8 months...dada. She also says mama and nanny. There are probably more, but not anything I can understand yet. lol

OK - I don't want to seem to be bragging but at almost 14 months DD has a bit of a repertoire for her words: mama, dada, door, baby, wow, hi, clock, light, hat and up. She'll say things like "dada, up" and hold her arms up to be picked up.
She's been pointing and clapping for a few months and is very good at using her signs for hungry, more and done. All that said, each child develops at a different pace and in a different way so stay in touch with your ped.

My boy is 18 months, and the dr didn't seemed concerned with his words at his 15 month appointment, I think it was only like 5 MAYBE. He started pointing at 13 months I think after he figured out walking, he was a late clapper too...maybe about the same time as pointing I think.
He says a LOT of first syllables (da = mickey mouse (no idea how he got that), dog, dad; Meh = milk, more, etc). Words (a little hard to understand) = mama is the best, dada (when we tell him to say da DA, otherwise it's just da), nana, papa, Drea (my best friend that watches him when I work) airplane (new), hi mom (new), hi dad (new), aw man (new), cheese (new), sissy (new), jason (new & pretty hard to understand). All the (new) ones are one he just started learning in the last couple of weeks. He started walking at 13 months & has been so busy figuring out how to climb, trying to jump, etc. He's working on words now that he has the walking thing pretty much down pat. I've noticed that he does one "progress" at a time. So you can't expect a child to learn too many things at once, especially huge milestones like walking / talking / etc.

My fc came to me at 21 mos old and was not saying a lot...can't recall but I know it wasn't much at all. Was evaluated to be one year behind in expressive language. After speech therapy, weekly for a year, my FC no longer qualified for any services. Won't keep quiet now!
![]() Good luck.

Our peditrician is really great and really encourages early intervention. Her rules are if the baby is not saying at least 3 words, pointing or waving by 12 months; she wants him to go to early intervention to be screened. I know its hard not comparing kids... My son was always doing things wayyyy early; and now my daughter seems to be on the slower end of normal. Its hard, I know. If your county has an early intervention program, I would give them a call. Its free and it certainly cannot hurt. And if they don't think your son needs services; then you get to stop worrying ![]()

Can't say enough positive things about Early Intervention...best kept secret in NJ (sadly). I have several friends who had never heard of it (and whose children could have benefitted).

Joshie is 2 weeks shy of a year and can say ma-ma, da-da, pa-pa (Grandpa), na-na (Grandma) ba-ba (bottle), Brad (his older brother, he actually says his whole name, uh-oh. He just learned uh-oh though and the whole family worked with him to get the "oh" part out. He doesn't point, but will wave bye bye. When you ask him how the car-car goes, he will respond with raspberries with his lips. When you say "Oh, Joshie's got a bad cough" he will cough right on cue. He will patty cake, but he wants to slap your hand instead of patting with both of his 2 hands. Oh, one recent word is "kitty" but he whispers it for some reason. When he eats, he says "num-num". When asked how a puppy goes, he barks.
Mind you, my father stays with us during the week and used to be a speech therapist. Dad will tell me what word or sound they are working on in that particular week and we tell everyone else and we all work with him on it. Blessings, Michelle

Joshie sounds adorable!
My friend's daughter is a preemie and working with New York EI for speech and (I think) core strength to help with her walking. It's working well! My friend had to buy a doll with all these accessories and work with her daughter between visits but she's probably 18 months and has maybe 5 words (she was a preemie). DS is 11 months in a few days and only says Dada, claps, points and once in a while waves. But he also says aaaaaaa (short A) when he calls for me so he's identifying me with a word (does that count?) I'm not calling EI if he's not exactly at 3 words in four weeks. He's doing great. Also aren't boys a little slower than girls verbally? BTW I had a strange experience with EI when he was super young. Even though NY has GREAT state services It wasn't her fault but they were called only because of his head size and the fact that he was slow using his hands (what a joke he's as coordinated as a 3 year old now). I was shocked because A. She told me I shouldn't take his temp anally because I could hurt him???? and also because she made me open his diaper! I didn't see why? He had one his horrible rashes he used to get down there and i literally felt like social services was here. i don't know why they wanted to see what was in his diaper. I told her that he was under the care of specialists and she asked to see his meds!? Does anyone know what THAT was about? I remember at the time feeling it was very invasive and irrelevant to why she was here. Would def. call them again though. My next door neighbor was principal at a local school for decades and is a huge advocate of EI. She said every kid could probably use it at one time or another but that a lot of parents (esp. first time parents) were reticent to call because they felt it reflected badly on them as parents! PS I've been working on patty cake for months! No dice though....he smiles but I think it's too girlie for him ![]()

I have an 18 month old who has been in EI (actually we call it Early Steps here) since was 13 months old for both PT and ST. At 12 months she could say dada (but in a babbling way - totally not on purpose) and that was it. She now says about 15 or so words, but 95% of the time, you have to coax her to say them. We are really trying to get her to speak spontaneously when she needs or wants something as opposed to just pointing and screaming.
I have two girlfriends who both have little ones the same age as my dd. One says 7 words the other doesn't say a single word yet. She got really upset with me when I suggested EI and said her pediatrician wasn't concerned so she wasn't either. If it wasn't for the ST therapy that we have gotten, I have no doubt that she wouldn't be speaking yet either. Soooo glad we went for the evaluation!
