Constant Marijuana Exposure in Utero

Anyone have some good web sites I can read about daily use of marijuana all through pregnancy and the possible effects on baby?

Thanks much,
Tunay

I do not have a website. BUT our CW told us that the effects are similiar to what a cigarette would do, low birthweight mainly. I do know that nicotene, can cause mild withdrawl in some babies exposed, so I am sure pot would too.

What are the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal? Anyone know?

Unlike alcohol, cocaine, and tobacco, studies show that there exists no evident link between prenatal use of marijuana and birth defects [5, p. 99] or fetal alcohol syndrome [72] in humans. In fact, marijuana use during the third trimester has been found to have a positive impact on birthweight [73]. It is known that Delta-9-THC does enter the placenta [45], so mothers are advised against consuming large quantities.

My dauther was born to nicotine and caffe. (extreme amounts) She did not want to eat for the first two days and projectile vomitted when she did. She was sensative to lights and she cried more than the average baby. This all continued somewhat for a few weeks, but if you could see her now you would realized a few weeks of no sleep is worth one day of that beautiful smile. Healty as any other 18 month old.

Tunay~ No websites, however our little guy was exposed to marijuana in utero on a weekly basis and some cigarette smoking and he is not showing any signs of developmental effects at this point. He is hitting all milestones on time or sooner. The only thing that we have dealt with so far is bronchitis-Bmom also had frequent bouts of bronchitis, I did ask the Pediatrician and she said there could be a link with all of this, however we will have to see if a pattern develops.

Brandy~ the links are greatly appreciated!

I did some reading on this topic last year and I cannot remember my sources, but I am about 98% sure that it is similiar to cigarette exposure. Possible low birth weight and early labor is the only thing that comes to mind. No long term issues as a result of the exposure. On a side note, our daughter weighed nearly 8lbs and her bmom smoked daily throughout. (my own mother smoked throughout her 4 pregnancies and all of us were over 8lbs!). I think if you go to the March of Dimes website you might find some info about exposure to certain drugs there; I think that's where I did my reading. This wouldn't be an issue for me.

My ex-husband had neices and nephews whose moms smoked marajuana, and none of them had any unusual problems before, during, or after birth.

My ds was exposed to cigarettes and marijuana in utero. He was born 4 lbs 12 oz at term, and spent 5 day in the NICU (had trouble mainting temp. and feeding). He has severe acid reflux and asthma, as well as possible allergies. However, he has met all milestones and is doing great (now is 18 months old).

Tunay, I just had my daughter to her pediatrician this afternoon, and I asked that very question of her. Actually I asked about all different kinds of drug use. She said that I should not be concerned about accepting a referral with marijuana use. She said she has had several children born to mothers who used marijuana and there has been no developmental delays that she has seen so far in any of them. She did, however, caution about cocaine and heroin and the possible effects with withdraw and later developmental issues.

I think it probably all rests on each situation and all the factors involved. I can say I would feel more comfortable accepting a referral with marijuana use after reading the above posts and talking with our pediatrician.

Our DD was exposed to cig smoking as well and there are no effects seen. I agree with the others that or CW mentioned that pot and cig smoking about the same but remember, it has to be something you are comfortable with.
