Naming a baby that is a different race

I'm not sure why, but I've been nervous to ask this. Just don't want someone to flame me for being uneducated, etc. So if I am, please be gentle. =)

For those who adopted a baby that is a race other than their own, did you name the baby a name that you had on your list of favorites or did you feel the need/desire to name your little one something that was similiar to names of their race? Or a combination of the two? (This includes domestic adoptions.)

Thanks!

Whatever the 'race' of the child/baby, we named him/her whatever we wanted. Didn't matter what color their skin was. For most, we used (or at least included) family names.

Sincerely,

Linny

Growing up, I always dreamed of having 2 boys one named Brad, the other one Josh. Brad is CC and my bio son, Joshie is our sweet biracial baby boy. To me, it doesn't matter what race my boys are...but believe me when I say...they really match well with their assigned names.

Blessings, Michelle

We went from our list, and her name suits her beautifully. We did keep her birth middle name though.

I adopted from Ethiopia and had picked out a first name that was Scandinavian and a middle name that was French. Our last name is Russian Jew. I ended up loving her birth name so I kept it as a first and added my choices as middle. So by name she is Ethiopian, Scandinavian, French, and Russian Jew. And it fits her beautifully.

Thought about the same thing

I have thought about this a lot! My dh and I were originally going to adopt from Guatemala before the country's adoption program virtually closed down. The name I love is very Norwegian (my dh is Norwegian) and it just seemed odd to name a Guatemalan baby this name. So had we adopted from Guatemala we would have likely chosen something different.

I think it's a matter of opinion, though, as I'm in the minority with this!

Heart

My son is Native American and we used a name off of our list. It was important to us that his birth mom like the name, so we ran it by her. We actually gave him 2 middle names, one being spanish, so that gets us some weird looks.

My DD is biracial and has a very Irish name. Ironically, her birth parents also named her and gave her a name that sounds even "more Irish!"

I always wanted to name a son Diego (before the show and regardless of race)....now not so much (I am sick of both Diego and Dora!).

I think it is really up to you. In our case, we had a list of names we liked and narrowed it down to favorites. But, for us, if we had brought home a child of a different race (and we were open to different races), we might not have chosen certain names on our list. I think the names we have for our two kids we would have used no matter what. But we had some very English/Scottish/Celtic names on our list and it would have already been a stretch to have those names with our VERY Italian last name, nevermind transracial adoption.

We did think about this...

more with our girls names than our boys. Our boys were all pretty traditional names, Benjamin, David, Tyler, and Owen. We would have given an AA boy any of those. The name I struggled with was Lillian and call her Lilly. In the end we decided we would name an AA daughter that if she "looked" like a Lillian. I did a lot of asking of family if they thought the name was "too CC" though. I think we over think things. They are our kids, name them anything you want. I can't personally think of any name that would be considered okay for a CC infant, but not an AA infant. I know a BR little boy named Aidan. Cute a button.

We didn't really think about it - just went from our favorites. DS is biracial AA/CC but our main concern was asking bio-mom & bio-dad if they wanted any certain name(s) with the understanding that we wouldn't necessarily use a name(s) either one told us.

It's weird that you posted this today - just last week, an acquaintance who has 2 bio biracial AA/CC children told me it was good we didn't give DS "a white name". I know plenty of white & black men who have his name so I was a little perplexed, but to each their own.

I've been thinking about this too. My DH is Irish/Czech. We agree on the first name for a boy which is William after an uncle of his and my grandfather but the middle name is where were stuck. He insists that the boy have his grandfather's name for a middle name. His Grandfather's name is Vaclav. Can you imagine a black or biracial boy named Vaclav? It is still very popular in the Czech republic and the current president there is Vaclav Havel but we don't live in the Czech republic. I'm afraid when the emom asks what names we have picked out and we say William Vaclav she'll pick someone else! For a girl we have picked out Jolene Elaine for my granmother and his mother. I love that name.
