Gonna Try Cloth Diapers!

Can someone recommend a good kind of cloth diaper? I was looking at the ones made by Under The Nile?

How do you do it????? I know zilch about it but I feel compelled to give it a go.

We cloth diaper both our kids! I use Bumgenius one size diapers. The same diaper fits both kids. They are pocket diapers, so you can put more or less stuffing in them for daytime or nighttime.

Do you have specific questions? i would be happy to answer whatever I can.

My first piece of advice: Buy a mini shower head attachment for the toilet. That way you can spray the poo out of the diaps instead of having to dunk and dunk and dunk. So much quicker and easier.

I recently read a review done by a magazine about cloth diapers. The bumgenius ones were rated 9.5 by the moms who tested them.

I told my husband that we will be looking into using cloth diapers with this new baby. Doesn't mean we will use them, but we will look into them. I'm not sure he's on board yet, but I'm going to take him to a store that sells them for them to tell us all about them. I think the long run money savings will get him. For me, it's the environmental savings as well as the savings for sensitive skin (which I know this baby will have).

We use cloth diapers on our girl -- they're great!

I like Fuzzi Bunz or Kushies. One is a pocket diaper, one is an all-in-one. They are easy to put on... just like disposables, but made of cloth. Prefolds are cheaper, but also a little less convenient.

Try Diaper Swappers - Cloth Diaper & Parenting Community. Mom's list used cloth diapers you can buy for a fraction of the price. Good way to try out a diaper before committing to a whole bunch of them.

Good luck!

I'm not using them b/c I can't make myself do it but my friend is and she's using Fuzzi Buns. They actually look pretty cool and if I were to use them I think that is what I would try!

I got Fuzzy Buns for DD1 and I still use the same ones for DD2, but only for when we're home.

We use disposable diapers for outings.

We started out with Fuzzi Bunz. They did not work at all for us and I when I started talking to others, I found several that said the same thing. The only complaint I have heard about the Bumgenius is that they are bulky. Most cloth diapers are though...

Don't do it personally, but have heard that the Kushies brand is great, and I have seen some young moms use them, they seem pretty easy to put on.

I think for me the questions would be:

How do you wash?
How many do you need to buy?
Do you need to change the baby more and if so how much more?

What do you do with the diaper if you are out and about? Does it get stinky? What is the best way to handle that?

Tell me about the kind with the liners?

How do you wash?
Hot wash, cold rinse with an extra rinse to get all the soap out. I use Allen's Naturally laundry detergent. It only takes a small amount of detergent. Then dry in the dryer or out outside on nice days. I use bleach about once a week to make sure all bacteria is killed.

How many do you need to buy?
We have 24 for 2 kids. I wash once every day to day and a half.

Do you need to change the baby more and if so how much more?
For us, we change Spencer every time he eats (about every 3-4 hours) and if he poos. Cameron has a larger bladder, so we change him about every 2 hours and when he poos. The sposies last longer without leaks, but if you fidn the right fit and proper washing routine, it is not that much more often.

What do you do with the diaper if you are out and about? Does it get stinky? What is the best way to handle that? I have a roll of plastic baggies in my diaper bag that I have always carried for dirty clothes, stinky diaps, etc. When we go out, I usually out an extra insert in Cameron's diap to cut down on leaks. Then if I change, I put the diaper in a baggie and tie it closed. Deepending on where we are, sometimes, I dunk the poos, sometimes I just put them in a bag and do it when I get home. I have not noticed any smell.

Tell me about the kind with the liners?
What do you mean by liners?

Hope this helps and let me know if you have further questions!

My question is what's the difference between the all in ones and the pocket kinds? What is the benefit of each?

All in ones are one piece. The inserts are shown inside the diaper. Therefore, you can't add more or less insert. I have also heard some people feel AIO's don't get as clean and they take a lot longer to dry.

Pocket diapers have an opening where you stuff the diaper. My Bumgenius came with inserts. During the day I use one insert. At night, I use 2 for Cameron. (Spencer is not yet sleeping through the night.) I fele they get pretty clean and they dry quickly. (30-40 minutes on medium heat.)

Does that help at all?

We use the BumGenius all-in-one during the day and for overnight, we use the BumGenuis with two inserts.
She used to leak through disposables EVERY NIGHT.
Since we started on BumGenius, she has not leaked once.
I wish someone would have told us how EASY it was when she was first born.
I wasted hundreds and hundreds of dollars on disposables.

We keep her dirty ones in a soaking sink with Dawn dishwashing liquid. It must be Dawn. I don't know why. But Dawn kills the smell and keeps them fresh.
When a few are in there, we wash them in cold water in regular detergent and once a week put a capful of bleach in.

And yes, you need the hose attachment which hangs on the side of the toilet.

Her bottom is NEVER red with BumGenius, but if they are all dirty, we are out, etc., and I have to use a disposable, she immediately gets a red bottom.

We have 9 or 10 of them, I think, and we rarely run out.

Also a cloth diaper family here! Loved Bumgenius till the velcro became an incredible fascination for Z! Now we use lots of prefolds (I am in love with tie-dyeing them!!!) and covers that SNAP! I have never had a blow out up her back with cloth, but I have with sposies.

Before you invest a huge chunk of money, I suggest buying a few to try to make sure the fit is good! Have fun, but they can become addictive.
