How long did your agency tell you it would take to adopt?
We have our agency picked, home study completed and almost done our profile (this part is driving me nuts...)
So I was told it would take about 14 months to be matched, I just wanted to see what you were told and how long it actually took? We are hoping to adopt a caucasian infant, they say this usually take longer than some. Oh and did you get a seperate phone line, my Uncle said he had to when he adopted, but that was 18 yrs. ago. Thank again...best of luck to everyone waiting and matched... ![]()

Signed up with agency 9 months ago and had one disruption. I am in the minority program and they told us it would take 3-6 months. I just called yesterday and they say they have no birth moms. I called another agency in FL and they say the longest wait they have had was 1 year and 3 months for a family that was very inflexible but this agency wants 5000 dollars up front for possible birth mom expenses.
Anyhow the more flexible you are the quicker it will be. If you are willing to be more open and if you will accept more drug or alcohol exposure it should improve your chances. |

Our agency didn't want to give an average. It's 100% random. We waited 22 months, but were not open to race, drugs, alcohol etc. We were pretty much the ones who had been waiting the longest.

Our agency did not give any definite time frame. Their average wait time was around 16 months but there were families who were placed in days and others that took years (in fact, there is still a family waiting that was waiting when we were for our first placement). Our DD came home after a 13 month wait. With DS, the average had increased to 18 months and we were prepared for at least that long, but he came home after 12 months of waiting. It just depends on who is seeking an adoption for their child and what they are looking for in possible parents for their child, among other factors. I am certain our waits were shorter because we had no preference to race and were willing to consider many health or potential health issues that other waiting families wouldn't. No separate phone line here. |

We were told 9-12 months average wait and it was less than a month for both our adoptions.

If you can forget everything you know and hear about 'timelines' you are better off! We thought about time alot as we started the process for #1. Ask many many on here, It will drive you crazy! But the reality of adoption is NO ONE can know how long it will take for each situation. It depends on soooo many factors and personal preferences, and no 2 situations are every the same. Life and waiting became sooooo much easier when we were able to let go of the 'timeline' and just know our babies will find their way home when the time is right! Sorry that this doesn't really answer your question. I just wish someone had convinced me of this reality earlier on in our journey! ![]()

Our agency said because we are open to any race or gender it would be 1 to 3 months. After we were homestudy approved they told us they "had no birthmothers" also. We've been shown twice but not picked. We signed with a second agency yesterday to increase our chances of being shown and hopefully picked. I try to remind myself to "let go and let God" Most days that works for me. Some days though, I give God a royal temper tantrum over the whole ordeal
Good Luck on your journey. I hope your wait is a short one! |

Our facilitator said anywhere from days to around a year, depending on your openess. We were open to a lot of things and it took us around 7 or 8 months (can't remember exactly anymore.)

I agree with those who say that one should forget about timelines. I say if you're restrictive in your preferences, prepare for a long wait - you'll be pleasantly surprised if you're matched quickly. And continue living your life, rather than sitting by the phone or chekcing your email every 5 minutes. Hard, I know, but at least you preserve your sanity (at least somewhat...)

Our agency also wouldn't put a definite timeline on it... they said it could be anywhere from a day to 2-3 years... however, we were working with an agency that did not network... we had to do the networking (which, in the end, DS's birthmom was refered to the agency by someone else... so we didn't have to network per se...she looked through profiles and picked ours)
From time of being homestudy complete until bringing DS home, it was 13 months. |

We researched agencies and found one with a high placement rate. Some agencies in the same area really relied on the adoptive families to network and had fewer placements. Our agency didn't give us wait times, because it was up to the expectant moms to choose from all profiles that matched their criteria. We weren't very open to drugs or additional living expenses and were matched in four months. DD's birthmom and I are very similar to each other, so I imagine if she had not been in that situation for another year, our wait would've been a year and 4 months!

We were told it could be next week or 2 years. Just random. We got DS in 3 months!!! Now it seems that was really quck but during those 3 months I was going crazy with waiting for phone call!!

We were told 3-6 months
More if we were gender specific. We weren't and we were placed 6 weeks after we were HS approved.

Our situation was an "identified adoption" but we were told by the agency that had it not worked out for some reason.....that the longest anyone had waited at their agency was about 1 year & those were the couples that had the most restrictions.

I agree that it's best to try to ignore timelines. All they'll do is drive you NUTS.
But I can tell you what our agency told us. Their average was 12-18 months, and the more open we were and the more wenetworked, the faster it would happen. We were open to gender, race and various medical issues. We weren't open to drug or alcohol exposure. We waited about seven months, our networking is how DD's birthparents found us, and she is CC. We did get a separate toll free number that was transferrable to any other phone number so the line could literally go along with us wherever we went. |
