Long time insomniac here…I have a routine, I ALWAYS get up. I brush my teeth. I go potty. I check my email (and the forums)…then I check and see if I feel tired…If so, I give it another try; if not, I read a book or catch up on recorded shows on the DVR. Then I do it all again. I do all of this in the dark, because I don’t want to wake up DH. Therefore, I sport gorgeous bruises all over my shins from running into things.

Good luck with your sleep.

BESIDES forums and blogland and all things internet??? What a strange question....

I usually watch a movie or read a book until my eyes are sleepy again. If my feet hit the floor it's the curse of death for me so I have to do all of it from my bed or I'm up - possibly for the day.

1. Troll the forums and do Google searches for particular topics and try to pass along useful information [I have learned a lot of random things this way ha].

2. Stand in front of the fridge and subsequently eat random food items even though I am not hungry. Lately it has been Ben & Jerry's or toast with butter and jelly.

3. Write in my online journal [www.freeopendiary.com].

4. Look at engagement rings online - my boyfriend sometimes wakes up to find an email in his inbox with a link to a ring I've found at 4 am that I really like.

5. Delete files from my computer - like old documents or pictures.

6. When I can't sleep, I think too much. I am a diagnosed insomniac who refuses medication, but sometimes I'd like to be knocked out cold so I can sleep rather than have a running list of thoughts in my head all night - like grocery lists, places I need to go, errands I need to run, people I need to call. Argh.

I am a lifelong insomniac...my parents say I was a night-owl even as an infant. This year I have been going thru menopause, which basically means I've been getting no sleep at all. Besides haunting these forums in the middle of the night, I...

  • Play online at two different virtual-pet websites. (Stop laughing ~ I know they're aimed at the younger generation, but there are thousands of middle-aged women playing there, believe me!!)
  • Catch up on the many magazines that I subscribe to.
  • Play an electronic hand-held Sudoku game.
  • Watch classic movies on Turner Classic Movies or the Fox Movie Channel. (AMC has too many commercials!)
  • Browse the New York Times website, especially the Op-Ed section.
  • Organize my bookcases and admire my hundreds' of books, especially my Folio Society books. (My book obsession is getting worse with age.)
  • Teach my cats new tricks...I'm lucky that my cats are nocturnal, lol!
  • Make mental notes of what I should be doing on my house repairs. Lists, lots of them...
  • Eat one or two flour tortillas, smothered in butter and Tobasco Sauce.
  • Worry about how I'm not getting much sleep these days...

If reading for a little bit doesn't do it, I start cleaning--especially the kitchen floor. It's the the only time that the floor really gets completely clean, dries and then stays that way for a few hours

I have a hard time falling asleep. My mind doesn't want to shut up. If I'm not asleep in 45 min after going to bed I take 25 mg of Benadryl. That's half an adult dose but it will put me to sleep in 15 min!
