How long do you have to reside in a state to adopt?

My DH is a preacher and he lost his job so we have to look for a new one. I had heard somewhere that you have to be live in a state for 1 year before you can adopt. Is this true?? I'm so upset....my dreams were finally coming true after 3 years of infertility and now we may have to put them off for another year.

Not that I know of. DH and I hadn't lived in CA consistently for a year (he was deployed, I was home) when we started the adoption process. I'd actually only been back 4 months and he was back only a few weeks before our 1st homestudy visit.

Each state actually has their own guidelines. There are some states that only allow 'residents' to adopt - and resident is defined by a period of time (a year, for example).

Some states do not require this.
