Frequent and light colored stool, HELP!
At my son's 15 month check up (on 4/12) he lost 4 oz and grew 2 inches since 1/11. He was sick for about 3.5 weeks from mid Jan to mid Feb and I believe lost weight during that time. The MD was not overly concerned because he's healthy otherwise and is behaving normally. However, he wants to check him again in 6 weeks. Since that visit, we've been feeding him more (particularly milk, cheese, protein). However, I'm a little concerned because now he's pooping 3-4 times a day and it's usually light colored (it was almost white 2x's). He's acting fine but I'm a little concerned because it seems like everything he's eating is coming out of him within an hour or 2. I want other peoples input on this because my DH and other family members think I'm overreacting. I'm going to also talk to his babysitter (who has 3 kids and 26 years experience babysitting). I'm going to see what she says over the next couple of days because she's only sat for him 2x's since his last appt.
If she's says she thinks that something's up, than I'll definately call. I just want to know if this is new mom jitters or something to worry about. Again, he looks and is acting fine. If anyone else has had this or similar experiences please respond. Thanks!

Beth, I am sure it's nothing to be alarmed about, but it's better to call the doctor and see if s/he wants to see your son. It does sound a little strange for a 15 month old and he may have some allergy or something that needs to get checked. Trust your mom instincts!

If it was me I'd be looking at what is different. Like when you realized he lost weight and you changed what and how frequently he was eating....are you over feeding him? Is there too much dairy? I was always told that between 12-18 months the babies don't gain much weight, more length and then add to the fact he was sick....probably much more active.
I would really look at how much and what you are feeding him and simplify his diet. Did the doc tell you exactly WHAT to feed him? E is much younger but his tummy does better on cereals than protein. And a lot of dairy I don't know....worth taking a close look at with doc etc. but I would say not to panic. I have been able to correct E's tummy problems by just taking a step back and giving him one kind of easy to digest thing per meal for a while. Happy Belly's makes a GREAT easy to digest rice cereal. Then I start again, reintroducing one food at a time. I actually figured out he was allergic to peas this way because all that stuff you do at the beginning, introducing them to one food at a time when they first try solids doesn't always work when they can develop allergies later! good luck! Im sure he'll be fine! Esp. cause he's acting like himself! Let us know how he's doing!

How long has he been pooping that way? My 19 month old DS just got over a virus that had him pooping thin, almost white and very distinct smelling 4-6 times a day. (his normal is 2-4x/day) It lasted a little over a week.
Between 12 and 17 months, my son grew taller and muscular but didn't really gain any weight, maybe a pound that entire time. I'm not so on the ball with weighing but I would bet there were months where he would loss some weigth, then gain it back the next. Over the last month or two I have noticed he is gaining again. If he is happy, lively and healthy, I personally would not worry too much. JMHO

Is your son's urine dark as well?

I would call the baby's doctor on this. What is the consistency and texture of the stool, any new foods, are the dairy products new? Make a list of anything new food wise, concentration of milk if that applies etc;

My son's urine isn't dark. He's been on whole milk for 4 months. He was on milk based formula and he's been eating yogurt for about 8-10 months. He is very active! We haven't introduced anything new lately. We've just increased the amounts because we're trying to put weight on him and he just poops it out within 1-2 hours (usually within an hour). At least he does't poop out is bedtime bottle with rice cereal!

3 kids here and 26 years experience in childcare. I would not be overly concerned about this as long as he is active and otherwise seems to feel well. I would give it another few days and if nothing changes I would call the doc's office and just check. Sometimes it just takes a while for their little bodies to get used to the amount or type of food. Try some crackers, goldfish, bread type stuff as snacks and at meals for a few days to see if anything changes.

It can't hurt to call the doc just to check. Light poop could signal malabsorption, and it would be best to get ahead of it. Of course, it could also be nothing at all, but calling will put your mind at ease.
