medical adoptions???
One of the other one of my groups posted this website last night. After reading through it I have to say that I am completely horrified with this. Can anybody shed some light on this? Is this legal? Is this real? Is this a joke? I certainly hope it is a joke but even it is I hope that the website gets shut down.

This is definitely not real. I have seen some "tongue in cheek" things like this...sometimes they are started by "anti-adoption" groups or people (though I don't know where this one was generated). Pretty sick (and I have a pretty warped sense of humor!).

I heard it's a hoax, but I don't know much about it.
Edited to say: I just went onto the site. I think it's a joke in very, very, very bad taste (and I'm generally someone with a dark sense of humor). But I'm even more sure it's a hoax. But someone put a lot of work into this, and I'm not sure what they're trying to prove.

I am glad to know that it is a hoax but appalled to think there is someone out there who is sick enough to spend the time and energy to make such a website. It's really kinda scary.
Not to get OT of the original post but this brought to mind another kinda related topic that has been botherming me..... I saw a news story about a couple with a child who has cancer. So far, no one in the family was a bone marrow match so the couple had decided to conceive another child in hopes that he/she would be a match for their first child. I can't help but think that is wrong. What do you guys think??? |

I'm a pretty open person when it comes to humor, but this is in no way even remotely funny.

Hoax
I read this in horror, just knowing it had to be a hoax. I was 100% convinced when I read the children's profiles.
Who thinks up this crap? I sent them a nasty message on their contact form telling them what I think of their "joke". M Last edited by mg1970 : 02-07-2008 at 11:20 PM. |

I know a group of on-line friends who are working on a statement to this site's creator and also checking into reporting them. I cannot believe anyone would even fathom that this would be funny. Additionally, if any international org. read this, it is worrisome that some might think it was for real. Truly disgusting. susan

Reading the information on their web site actually made me nauseous, joke or no joke. I am a firm believer in free speach, but this.... It goes too far.

Good satire is supposed to highlight the absurdities and horrors of real life. Have you read many agency websites? There are some that are truly horrifying. Here's a few excerpts.
"Adopt a newborn Quickly" "You select the child you want" "our people began their mission of uniting adoptive families with deserving orphans." "Travel wise, it requires similar travel of 3-5 days. Cost wise, it's much more affordable than Guatemala. Compared to Mainland China, Taiwan has much shorter wait periods, and much shorter travel. One of the most convenient places to adopt, Taiwan is a modern land offering a process more comparable to western standards. " "Adoptable children are of Mayan, African, or mixed heritage. Applicants may choose the race and gender of the child." Most of the information out there is about filling the needs of the adults involved. Adoption is an industry and they are targeting the consumers. If you really think that is harsh, read the websites. Medical adoptions just took the general tone of many adoption websites a few steps further. I think it is important to note that people were horrified because it sounded so real. Maybe we should be horrified at some of the real organizations out there that are really just in the business of finding babies for those who desire them.

As I said, I have a pretty warped sense of humor...and I do appreciate satire. I don't appreciate something that makes adoptive parents look like total jerks and kids like commodities. I shudder to think of internet savvy adopted kids finding this and trying to appreciate the "satire" there.

bethy, good for you!!
I will say that based on my reading of some anti-adoption stuff, the more the creator of the website gets blasted, the more "joy" he or she is going to get from getting a parents upset. but because I would like to see it come down, I'm giving it a whirl!! |
