How do I find an attorney?

Hi,

I'm wondering how I would go about finding an attorney to do an independent adoption and match us with an e-mom? I have looked for adoption attorney's before.. but they mostly do all kinds of family law and I wasn't sure what I was looking for.

Thanks!

If you haven't done so already, I'd go to the website of the American Academy of Adoption attorneys. Once there, click on your state (or a nearby state you wish to work with) and you'll find listings for any members.
Some states don't allow networking and referrals, others do, I'm told. Also, don't get discouraged if you call one office to find their fees are high---because fees vary with all of them.
And, if you can't find one to help, I've found that some attorneys WILL refer you to another attorney who might be able to help you.

Good luck with your pursuit.

Sincerely,

Linny

We found our attorney through word of mouth...i know that is not much help to you but I would ask people you know who have adopted and research online, phonebooks, etc. Definetly look for one that specializes in adoptions as the laws can be compicated. Ours also sat down and talked to us for nearly 2 hours free of charge. Before we decided to work with him. He also did not charge any $$ upfront. I guess these are all things I would look for when you first talk with attorneys.

Matching for an independant adoption is in our court. He was able to suggest ways to 'network' etc...but we are doing the leg work.

I talked to my OB/GYN. He referred us to our attorney.
