Adoption and breast feeding

I was at a doctors appt and I mentioned the adoption and how it was going and she said to me "have you considered breast feeding, if you are interested I can have you visit with our lactation consultant" I was kinda shocked. I was unaware that this was an option. So I guess I am just curious, has anyone else considered breast feeding their adoptive child? I am personally very interested in it and am waiting to see the lactation consultant. I think it would be a wonderful bonding experience for both me and my child.

Rebekah-

Yep-somewhere on here there is a forum on it.
Also google or yahoo search "inducted lacation" and see
what you come up with. Lots of variations on how you
can go about it, depending on what youre comfortable with. I plan on trying it myself when the time comes.

Good luck in your search.

I breastfed my adopted baby. I wrote about my experiences, both good and bad, on the Hoping to Adopt blog. Here is the direct link to the breastfeeding series.

I don't if anyone has seen this link, but it has GREAT information about adoptive breastfeeding. I plan to breastfeed the child that we adopt in the future and I found this to be very helpful! Ask Lenore ~ Breastfeeding

My aunt did grant it was never enough to sustain him, but it was more of a bonding think for them. My parents coworker was offered this option when she and DH got their son only a few days old but she decide not too.

I did not breastfeed my son, but plan to with my second child. I have been reading up on it and am very interested. There is a lot of great info in the forum section on Breastfeeding your Adopted Child and also if you type "adoptive breastfeeding" into your search engine.

When people ask if I feel like I missed out on anything, being that I did not physically carry my son, the only thing I tell them is breastfeeding. I wish I would have looked into it further before his birth.

The links posted are great and you should def. meet with the LC.

I have breastfed both of my girls and it is an amazing experience. I have also bottlefed and it is not the same (for me, atleast). If you do breastfeed, you will love it. The health benefits for baby and mommy are amazing. Even random things like a few drops of breastmilk in an infected eye will cure pink eye.

Anyways, I know that is getting OT, but I just wanted to give you some encouragement!

I spoke with a lactation consultant and am starting the process in a few days. I am very excited and think it will be a wonderful bonding experience for us. I work at a daycare and have for a couple of years and I know each child is different but on average I see that babies do much better on breast milk than formula.
