Tshirt I saw this weekend
I was enjoying a wonderful Saturday afternoon with my family and my new 11 week old adopted son when my husband noticed a tshirt proudly displayed in a store window. The tshirt was bright yellow and said in BIG letters
Adopting is the new Black I didn't know what to think about it so I went into the store and asked the manager what it meant. She said it was meant to be a "joke" a tagline b/c of all of the recent celebrity adoptions. I looked at her strangely ( I didn't see any humor in it) and she gave me the headquarters phone number. I called today and spoke to someone who handles store operations. She explained it to me that it is meant to be a joke - it is in a series of tshirts that say blue is the new black or pink is the new black and that since people do everything that celebrities do adopting will be a cool hip thing to do. I explained to her that I am not cool nor hip and that I as an adoptive mom feel it was in poor taste b/c I did not adopt to be cool or hip or to follow a trend - I adopted to become a mom and I know most people did it for the same reason.

I wonder if that company (following their logic) would produce a tshirt saying "Anorexia is the new black" or "Rehab is the new black". Thanks for challenging their misguided attempt at humor.

I don't see why folks got to joke about that. There's nothing trendy about adoption and if celebrities want to do it, why joke about it?
Folks annoy me too much...

She gave me a blow off anwser of I will pass along the fact that you called in and that you were offended. Whatever ... but I was not going to let it go without talking to someone so I feel good that I called and complained. How would a child feel if they saw that shirt in school (it is a very popular store) and they were adopted - like his or her parents did it to be cool? UGH!! Gross!!!

Ewww, sorry that you had to see that, but I'm glad that you called to let them know how tasteless the shirt is. That would have turned my stomach too...ick!

I seriously just don't think this is a funny shirt...i'm not usually very sensitive but this is just stupid.

I just wanted to reiterate what a great thing you did by calling the company. When I read this it really got my blood pumping... I can only imagine how I would feel if I saw this displayed in a store!

Adoption
(and religion) are two things I don't think should be made light of on t-shirts. I'm glad you called. You did the right thing by complaining. Too often we vent but don't take a stand.
The message clearly sends a very "it's the cool NOW thing to do" message which is so wrong. What happens when it's no longer "cool or now"? Will celebrities stop doing so everyone else will stop also? I hate the way we look up to these celebrities like they are someone special. They are NOT. They are people (with built in nannies and all the trimmings that can make parenting a lot easier). Geesh!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I'm the one person who sees it as a positive then... To me it says that adoption is a good thing and not something to be shy about. I always say at work that "safety is the new black" or "PPE is the new black" or "seat belts are the new black" or anything like that to convey that safety is something everyone needs to get behind. I think more people need to adopt, especially if they would choose adoption over adding more people to the planet. So personally I would totally wear a shirt that says "adoption is the new black."
