My husband and I are adopting an 8 year old girl from foster care. We are going to court in a few weeks or so to have it finalized. I want to get her a gift, something special, for her to keep.

Does anyone have any ideas? I would like to have something with her name on it. A necklace was my first thought. I don't really know.

I think a necklace (or even a bracelet) with her name on it would be a very nice keepsake for her to have. Another suggestion would be a nice jewelry box for her to put all her future "treasures" in. You could have her name inscribed on it. There are some cool stores in most malls that do things like that.

We were not present for our DD birth since we didn't meet her until she was 4 weeks old. But last week I was in the area and decided to stop by the hospital where she was born since I had never been inside. While I was there I got her a pair of gold birthstone earrings from the giftshop. I wanted her to have something from us that came from the building where she took her very first breath. Her ears aren't even pierced yet...LOL...but one day she can wear them and I'll tell her where they came from

They have those really cool charm bracelets right now. You can get charms with letters and later add to it with things she interested in (i.e. soccer, ballet, music, etc). You can also get birthstones, Angels, crosses, hearts, etc. A lot of jewelry stores have them as well as online retailers. I think those are cool because you can add to them for years to come. I also love the idea of the keepsake/jewelry box.

Our foster daughter is younger. I have purchased a cabbage patch baby and put it away. On her adoption day we will give her the baby, so that she can adopt her baby on the same day we adopt her. The necklace is a great idea for a more long term keepsake.

we bought charm bracelets for our girls on our dd adoption day. 2 charms - 1 says sister, 1 says family. a cute keepsake. she has added charms to it for different occasions.

We did the Italian Charm bracelets for my (at the time) 5 & 8 yr olds.

They love them.

My best friend gave my daughter and me charm bracelets with a starter charm. Hers says Daughter and mine says Mother. Every year, on the anniversary of our finalization we go do something fun and each pick out matching charms for our bracelets. They always have to do with what she is interested in for the year.
