Moving after homestudy but before adoption...big deal?

We are ready to start the adoption process, but know we will be moving (in the same town, just to a different house) sometime this year. Is it a big deal or expense to go ahead and have the homestudy, then move to a different house? What kind of update would be required? We have 2 small children, so everything is already pretty babysafe in our house. Thanks for any suggestions/experiences.

Not sure but wouldn't think it is a huge deal if it is in the same town. I would ask the agency that is doing your homestudy.

I think they'll still want to come check your new home, so you'll probably need to update.

I'd agree with Denice and HBV.

Let your agency know ASAP so they can tell you what would be expecte din the way of an update. At the very least they will probably want to come see the new house and I would guess they'll want to know about the new neighborhood. The earlier you inform the agency the better chance you have of not being left waiting.....and waiting.....

Good Luck!

You might want to Hold off on the Home-study visit to your present Home,, The paper-work they fill out, will have information about the present home,,and when your paperwork makes it to court,,it may have conflicting information on it,, I would also suggest contacting your Home-Study Agency and having a Brief meeting,,more so to talk about your Family Bio...
Good Luck!

We moved in the middle, but needed an update anyway. No charge through our agency.

We moved four hours away from our other house. This was right when we found out an expectant mother had chosen us. When asked if the move would affect the decision or anything for the agency, it turns out it was not a big deal at all. The SW for this area just needed to come out and do a homestudy update. The agency kept saying how easy an update was, and it really was not a big deal that we were moving.

You might not want to wait to do the homestudy though--with our agency, our homestudy had to be complete before we would be considered or shown to any expectant mothers.

We moved into a new house, same town. Our agency would have charged a 600 dollar update fee. So we rescheduled the date, had the social worker come out the day after we moved in, lol, we moved our stuff in the evening, unpacked the next morning, and the social worker came at 3pm...
We have never unpacked that fast before...
So I would ask your agency, or homestudy provider what their "rules" are.
Good luck...

We moved to NC after applying to our Ohio agency for our second adoption - into a temporary corporate apartment while we looked for a house here. So we had to hire an NC agency to do the homestudy - they said they would go ahead and complete the homestudy for the apartment and then do an update for our new house, but we ended up waiting until we moved into our house to have the visits. They said it was a pretty common situation - no big deal. I too would check to see what the update fees are and decide whether getting things started in your current home, and your timeline for moving, makes it worth the update fees if there are any.

Good luck!

Cate
