November is National Adoption Awareness Month

National Adoption Awareness Month, originally created to promote adoption from the US Foster Care System, has been accepted by the general adoption community as a month to celebrate adoption and its role in creating hundreds of thousands of families all over the US.

What do you plan to do this month to raise adoption awareness with those you interact with on a daily basis?

I am doing an adoption information meeting at a local library and helped the librarian pull together a display of specific titles related to adoption.

In our area the new 2006 Heart Gallery has its opening tonight and we are going. Some of the featured children will be there so it should be really nice.

We are working on our agency's annual awareness raiser "WALK FOR ADOPTION", which is this weekend. This year the walk will include other local agencies so that families interested in adoption or expectant mothers interested in placement can have access to information on different adoption options in one place. Next year my husband and I will chair the event.

Marci--primarily professional, but of course, with my personal spin added in throughout. At some point down the road, though, I might call on you to be a speaker regarding open adoption to a group...that would be awesome! People always want to hear a personal perspective and starting out may not have anyone they know who has done open. Thanks!

I have sponsored our church bulletins in honor of children waiting for adoption.

I am also stepping up my efforts to get a organized effort for clothes for foster children. Especially those that come into care with nothing.

I'm wearing a white ribbon (sent to me by our agency) and happily answering the questions that people ask about it.

Also, I'm going to contact the local news stations and newspapers to suggest they do stories on respectful and ethical open adoptions.

One year ago, in our local newspaper there was an article on National adoption awareness. I gave it to birthmom (we were fostering her first infant daughter) and told her to consider reading it and possibly to consider us to parent the baby she was carrying. A week later, she told us she wanted to be in an open adoption with us!!

Fast forward to March, I was in the labor room and the next day took home our precious baby girl! We are almost finalized in a very open adoption! The sweet older half sister who we fostered is living with her paternal grandparents.

Take care!

March
I am adopted

3 biological sons
beautiful baby daughter ( adoption almost finalized)
