Indy Adoption Update

As you may or may not know, my husband and I are pursuing an indy adoption in Texas. (I am learning so much!) Anyways, we spoke with our attorney and she said that the legal fees will be $1500-$3000 depending on if the birth father is included in the "discussion". If he is, then we are looking at the $3000, if he is not, then we have to have another attorney represent his interests so that he can't come back later. I don't really understand that...how could someone represent his interests when he isn't present...but I am not an attorney. We are still looking at a home study being good for only 60 days however. I guess because most indy adoptions are viewed as something that happens between relatives. At any rate, we are hoping to set up a home study soon and we are on the search for a birth mother. If there is someone out there that has done an indy adoption, I'd love to hear from you!

Can I ask why the homestudy will only be good for 60 days?

I'm in Indiana and our homestudy is good for a year. And I don't think that most of Indiana's adoptions are between relatives?

The homestudy is only good for 60 days because most indy adoptions in texas are between relatives. Now, I believe we can get an extension if we need, but typically they are only good for 60 days, and that is according to our lawyer and the head office of Child Protective Services.

Well, the 60 day quote came both from Texas' CPS headquarters AND my attorney. Believe me, I thought it was wrong myself. I guess Texas is just different in that regard.

I think people are assuming that your Indy adoption you are talking about is from the state of Indiana. I believe you mean an independent adoption? Is this right?
