In indiana a home study is valid for one year. I've not heard that it is different for other states.

The homestudy is good for longer than 60 days in Texas. Now, what I don't recall is if you have to have an update every six months or every twelve months. I'm thinking twelve, but am not positive.

See, 6 months would be okay with me...but 60 days? I would have to coordinate a birth mother do be due on those 60 days! This is hard enough as it is! lol

It's 1 year in CA. I would call again and maybe speak with a supervisor.

We are adopting from Texas and our agency says it needs to be updated every 6 months!

Hi MommyBear! See, that's what I thought...6 months, not 60 days! That would have been hard!

So, I called the state office for CPS and asked about the 60 day thing. The woman there said that it is normally 6 months, but for a private/independent adoption it can be 60 days. The reason is because we will know the birth mother. This makes sense, but I'm going to clarify with my attorney. It confuses me though, because we will have to find a birth mother, make sure she isn't due with in 1 to 3 months so that we can get home study approved, but then make sure that she's due within 2 months after that....??

That's just weird. What does knowing the birth mother have to do with anything? Its not as if you are waiting to get your homestudy UNTIL you find a birthmother. Very odd.

Make sure you are asking for the right thing - usually, if you live in a state that requires a homestudy for a Step Parent Adoption (I do) then the homestudy is good for 60 days...

So lame...

Yeah, that's what I thought too, but I told her it was for an Independent adoption...owell. I'm going to talk to my attorney about it. What a circus!

It was 6 mo. in TX for us which is why we had to finalize within the 6 mo. or we would have had to update it here in CT. In CT here they are goof or 2 years, but since we adopted in TX we had to go by their laws as well.

We didn't have to finalize 6 months from homestudy. As a matter of a fact, we couldn't finalize for a year with our oldest son due to a diligent search going on.

Maybe the post placement visits counted as an updated homestudy? I'm not sure. Talk to your attorney to find out.

Both the CPS headquarters and my attorney told me that the home study for an indy adoption is good for 60 days. However, I believe that it can be extended if needed.
