Well since he is OUR son... That is the name we all decided on. He can't talk very well at only 16 months.. But he will call her what ever he wants to call her when he is able to..

I'm just confused as well. Why start out purposefully confusing the child? Don't want to give her a Mother type name? That's fine. Call her Amy. Referring to her as Aunt Amy will only serve to confuse him once he is able to understand that Amy gave birth to him... and then he'll attribute that aunts give birth to babies. (I mean, sure, aunts have kids, but you know what I mean.) I'm just not sure why you'd want to start out using something that will have to be changed in the not so distant future. That's why I've always just gone as Jenna. Then Munchkin can decide later if she wants to put a classifying title on it later. But it is good that the visit went well. And the pictures are priceless.

We've always planned on calling my sons' bmom Aunt as well. Of course, she actually is my sister, so she *is* their aunt. Her ex husband (who is not the bf) is insistent on telling their kids that my triplets are their cousins. I think, if it were possible, all of the adults involved would choose to not tell the boys who their birthmother is until they are older. There are enough children in the family who are aware of the situation, however, that this isn't feasible.
I think calling your son's bmom Aunt is ok. I have close friends who are "Aunts" to my children, and hubby's favorite "Aunt and Uncle" growing up were in no way related to him, just his parent's best friends. I doubt he ever confused them for his parent's siblings. |

All my friends are "Aunts" too.. But you know what.. What ever he wants to call her when he is bigger will be fine with me.. The Name AUNT AMY was chosen by both her and me so that is what she wanted too.. not just me..

I think it's fine to call the bmom "Aunt" it's a title you both decided on and it's something you (the mom) are comfortable with and that's what counts. IMO

FWIW, if you decide to change her "title" -- there is a southern honorific of calling respected women "Miss ______" My students called me Miss Tammi (mostly because my last name is unpronouncable unless you are Greek, I suspect!)
Those pics are so adorable. Your son's first mom looks like you... it is really obvious that you two have quite a bond. How awesome is that! |
