???? for parents of preemies...

Did anyone feed NeoSure Advance formula? If so, for how long? My son was born at 32 weeks and the hospital nutrionist said to suppliment (I'm breastfeeding) with NeoSure until 9 months. I'm considering weaning (maybe) and I wasn't sure if I should continue the NeoSure until 1 year or switch him to a regular formula after 9 months (if I decide to stop breastfeeding). He is perfectly healthy with no issues related to arriving early. Just wonder what everyone else did or was told? Our doc is great, but not a specialist for preemies.

Thanks,
Chris

My great niece and nephew did receive Neosure for six months. I think the Neosure is wonderful. It helps the premies with their development. My great niece and nephew were born at 32 weeks gestation. They came home at 14 days old. They weighed 4 lbs and 8 oz and they were 14 inches long. They are nine months old and they are doing great.

it has extra clacium in it, you will have to discuss with your ped when he would like you to switch. did you get coupons for free ready to feed neosure they have them every where.

Thanks Michelle & Patti! Our ped talked about taking him off of it a while ago, until I told him the nutritionist in the NICU said he should be on it for at least 9 months. I did a quick search online last night to see if I could find any recommendations or journal articles on the subject, but came up blank. Our ped/family practice doc is great (best I've ever met and I'm a nurse too), but not an expert when it comes to preemies. We agreed that we would seek out a specialist if any special issues arose, but so far there have been absolutely none.

neosure

My little guy was on it in the NICU and we were given a box of it when we left but they said you couldnt get it outside of the hospital so wen we finished the box we were done. He was born at 25 weeks 1/11 ounces and 13 inches. He is 4 and as healthy, happy and smart as can be.

Try welcomeaddition.com , it is a ross nutritional web site. the american academy of pediatrics suggests that if your preemie is on neosure for 9 months, they will have greater weight gain, linear growth, and better bone density than if they were not on a supplemented formula. even if your were breastfeeding they might have you supplement your milk.

OOPs I made a mistake we were given something else at the hospital that supplemented the breastmilk we used Neosure once my milk ran out and kept him on that until we switched to pediasure.

My son was on neosure. If I remember correctly the pediatrician took him off of it when he was about 3 months old. I think it has a higher calorie count per ounce and as long as he was growing and gaining weight he could be switched. He is now 21 months old and running all over the place!

Thanks everyone. It sounds like 9 months should be plenty long enough. I'm going to try to continue breastfeeding until he's 1 year. He is growing and developing like a champ. I often forget he was a preemie until I see him next to another baby his same age. Actually, at the moment he is rolling around on my bed and laughing at how funny he is I appreciate everyone 's input!

Two of mine were preemies and after elaving the hospital they were taken off high cal formula pretty quickly once they were growing well. With Nathan who was born at 26 weeks (REALLY Preemie0 he was taken off of it once he hit 5 lbs at about 3 months and once my milk was well established when Miranda was about 1 month and 6 lbs she was taken off of it. Remember that your milk has is already higer in calories than regular formula and is actually about the same calories per oz as NeoSure. The mroe you suppliment the less milk you will make so I would get a second opinon from a Dr with more experience with nursing mothers. BTW both of my preemies are above average for height and Miranda is in the 75% in every measure even without adjusting for due date.

Thanks Lisa. The nutritionist said I should continue supplimenting to increase the calcium (and something else) that was needed for good bone development. By supplimenting we actually add a couple teaspoons to his breastmilk. That way he still gets mostly breastmilk. Supply hasn't been much of an issue (until a recent bout with mastitis). I was breastfeeding/pumping for both my little guys until recently. But, I've now switched the older one to formula with just a couple nursing sessions each day. I am glad to hear that we probably don't need to continue the NeoSure, especially past 9 months. He is growing really well and certainly doesn't seem to need the extra calories

Thanks for all the imput!
