Question
I got my information packet from one of the agencies we're thinking about. Anyway it says for domesic adoption, the average wait for a child to be placed with you after the homestudy is complete is about 1-2 years. Does this seem long to you? I was just curious about this.

That's pretty normal for agencies to say that. I know some people who wait longer and others (like myself) who don't even wait a year. I have adopted twice and both times it took 9 months from the time we turned in the application to the time the baby was born. |

Our agency said the average wait was 18 months. Once we were officially waiting, it took 2.5 years for us to be matched (total of 3.5 years from the time we sent in our prelim. application to dd being born).

I work for an agency and that is typically what we tell our clients. Many of our families place in under a year and a smaller number place within the one to two year mark. You also have to take into consideration your openness with certain situations. The more accepting you are of race, social/medical history, and openness in adoption, the quicker you would typically be presented to expectant parents.

I dont know Amber, seems pretty long to me. But I guess it really depends on the agency and your luck of the draw. With our first agency we were match the first month, as u know it didnt work out, then it was 8 months later. I really think it depends on the agency, how active it is, what you will except (how limited/open you are), and when its ur time, its ur time

Ou agency quoted 18 months. One couple placed in 6, we placed in 8 and 2 other couples who started at the same time also placed before us.
After we finalized, the caseworker admitted that their average really was more like 12 months, but they really hated to quote on the low side, because so many people got their hopes up and then got discouraged if it didn't happen sooner. Sidenote: A year or two before we chose this agency, another one quoted us 3 years! Then the 2 agencies merged, and their wait time was reduced, because they had more resources, plus they had each worked with birthmoms that had very different demographics, so the type of placements they had changed a bit.

The time limit seems like the time limit that the agency gave to my husband and me. The actual time was nine months. I am not saying that this could happen at the agency you are working with. The agency would ask me to call and check in once a month. We applied in May and in October a birthmother chose us. She kept the baby. In December another birthmother chose us and she kept her baby. In January 1988 the agency reported that they were not working with any new mothers. Every birthmom had chosen someone else. I called the first day of February and I was instructed that no birthmom had chosen us and no new bmoms. I prayed about it and asked the Lord to help me learn to live without children in our future. February 5th I received a call that I had a baby girl. She was our miracle.
