This statement completely baffled me by my neighborhood children. Please help me process this.
It was the first time I meet two of the little girls. They are 8 and 9, playing in front of our house. My dd who is now 5 spotted them and wanted to go out and say hi to them, so I took her out there to introduce herself. The one girl (J) said to her friend (K), she will get along great with your little sister. Then she turned to me and said, "but she is adopted". Meaning her friends little sister. I was so surprised, not knowing if (J) knew our dd was or if she was just sharing neighborhood news with me. I looked at my dd to see if she was going to say she was adopted too, but she didn't. She just stood there smiling at the girls. I finally stumbled out, well that is okay. It probably was not the best thing to say but I was really caught off guard. I now can't stop thinking of my dd standing there as I said this. I felt I should have said something else, handled it different, been more prepared, something... How would you have handled this differently? What would you have said. It bothered me greatly that they told me this little girl was adopted. Like do you still want to meet her if she is adopted? I guess that is how I felt it came out. Would anyone else have been caught off guard by a comment like this?

I came back to delete this post but found out I was too late..
Anyway...I worked this all out on another board I posted on at the same time. I realize now it was just something kids say without any type of meaning tied into it. Talking to Mom's who have children that age made me realize that. It wasn't said with any type of negativity at all. Next time I hear something like that, I think i will something along the lines of, "wow that is really cool/neat". |

wow...sorry I didn't see this before now!
I don't know that my kids would have shared their adoption either. Interesting though! I agree with the other moms about the age thing and etc. Kids don't put much stock/meaning into this whole adoption thing like we do... ![]()
