I'm posting this here because I want maximum input from lots of people!
I need quotes (lyrics/poems/straight up quotes) on fatherhood. Both gifts that I'm making for Josh (his first father's day) and J (Munchkin's Dad) need quotes. Josh's needs a LOT while J's only needs one. So let 'em rip. (Don't forget to put who wrote the quote or the song lyric! That's big for me!) GO!

Here are some of my favorites...
Jenna:
Good luck with your gifts - I, too enjoy making things for people that truly show how much I care for them. Hope these help? My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived and let me watch him do it. Clarence Kelland Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care about small boys. Anonymous I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection. Sigmund Freud By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong. Charles Wadsworth Blessed is the man indeed who hears many gentle voices call him father. Lydia M. Child One night a father overheard his son pray: Dear God, Make me the kind of man my Daddy is. Later that night, the father prayed, Dear God, Make me the kind of man my son wants me to be. Anonymous

"You don't become a great dad by donating your sperm. Lots of guys do that without ever acting much like a real Dad. Being a really great Dad takes three things - none of which require your genes:
Love God above all else. Love the Mother of your Children. Love your children like you want to be loved" My husband, Andy |

Fathers Day
When my son was in preschool, they painted the childs foot and stamped it on construction paper with the following poem:
"Walk a little slower daddy," said a child so small. "I'm following in your footsteps, and I don't want to fall" Sometimes your steps are very fast Sometimes they're hard to see So walk a little slower, Daddy, For you are leading me. Someday when I'm all grown up You're what I want to be. Then I will have a little child Who'll want to follow me. And I would want to lead just right, And know that I was true So, walk a little slower, Daddy, For I must follow you. Anonymous |

MY husband made that quote...what irked you about that? We have 1 bio child and 7 adopted children, I think he knows what he's talking about. He's a great dad and my kids are blessed to have him as their daddy. He neither loves nor favors our bio child over our adopted children. We have friends and family members who have only bio children and the dads are bad...REALLY bad. Never visit, never spend time with their kids, never support them financially and are only about themselves. Even if my husband hadn't said it, I'd have to agree...it does take WAY more than genes to make a good parent. Last edited by momofmykids : 06-06-2006 at 07:51 AM. |

Jenna,
I don't know if you listen to country music, but there is a song by George Strait that I believe is called A Father's Love. My favorite line of the song goes something likes this (I haven't heard it in a long time!): Let me tell you a secret about a Father's love- Daddy's don't just love their children every now and then, it's a love without end, amen.

Just a reminder here folks...Jenna isn't asking for a debate over what makes a good father...simply asking for quotes she can use for a gift to 2 special dads in her life.
If anyone wishes to split the debate part of the thread off into a new thread, just pm me and we'll do that. However, for THIS thread...no debate. Thanks! crick

Great quotes, I think I'll use some as captions for photos of DH with DS and frame them up!

Jenna,
Have you heard the Phillips, Craig, and Dean song that goes... He climbs in my lap for a goodnight hug He calls me Dad and I call him Bub With his faded old pillow and a bear named Pooh He snuggles up close and says, "I want to be like you" I tuck him in bed and I kiss him goodnight Trippin' over the toys as I turn out the light And I whisper a prayer that someday he'll see He's got a father in God 'cause he's seen Jesus in me Lord, I want to be just like You 'Cause he wants to be just like me I want to be a holy example For his innocent eyes to see Help me be a living Bible, Lord That my little boy can read I want to be just like You 'Cause he wants to be like me Got to admit I've got so far to go Make so many mistakes and I'm sure that You know Sometimes it seems no matter how hard I try With all the pressures in life I just can't get it all right But I'm trying so hard to learn from the best Being patient and kind, filled with Your tenderness 'Cause I know that he'll learn from the things that he sees And the Jesus he finds will be the Jesus in me Right now from where he stands I may seem mighty tall But it's only 'cause I'm learning from the best Father of them all |
