Travel Games for Toddlers? PLEASE tell me there is such a thing

Ok, so I am officially Insane.

We are taking DS on an 8+ hour road trip. He just turned 2 and I am concerned about what activities he can do to occupy his time in the car seat.

We do plan to stop often, but even broken up its a long drive.

Ds is a very typical just-turned-2 year old. He's not ready for eye spy or other games of the sort...

So Ladies....bring on the wisdom!! What games/activities can I pick up or get ready for him?

The people I nannied for traveled 12 hours with their two year old!! They brought tons of books, a portable DVD player, and a Leap Pad. They said she did really well. Does he sleep in the car? My SIL and BIL travel a lot at night because the kids will sleep in the car. They will head out at like 4, stop around 6 for dinner and then the kids will fall asleep in the car at 8 and they can drive for a while. That makes it easier. (If you can stay awake to drive at night!!)

We took our 3 year old on a cross country trip where we spent 2 full days driving each way. We brought lots of books, a portable DVD player, snacks, CD's with his favorite songs, and his favorite toys (within reason). We had to stop at least every 2 hours but all in all the trip went great. We would do it again. I think it is important to stop somewhere that they can do a little running and playing when you are taking potty breaks. (Rest areas are great for this). And as with everything involving kids, expect it to take a little longer than it normally would!! Good luck I hope it goes well.

Magna-doodle.....check
leap pad (the baby one).....check
obnoxious books that make noise.....check
flashcards.......check
tons of snacks...check

We don't have a portable dvd player...believe me I've contemplated picking one up, but we (meaning DH ) think it's a waste of money at this time. lol

I'd love to travel at night...but dh is worried about it, so we aren't. We do plan to stop very often.

thanks, and keep em comin!

When we travel with our two year old we take a DVD player, Crayola Color Wonder markers and coloring book, snacks and her two favorite things her snap on clothes and doll and colorforms~do you remember these as a kid? I loved them and all three of our kids love them. We also play games like find a red car, find the number 2 on a license plate etc she loves this game. Also, we always leave around 10:30 or 11:00 so the kids will sleep most of the way. We stop between 6 and 8 for breakfast depending on when they wake up and then we are there by lunch!

DVD PLAYER! It's the only time my daughter is allowed to watch so much -- but it's well worth it. They are reasonably priced now too.
