Is it possible for a US citizen to adopt a baby from Canada? I live in Port Huron, MI which is just across the St. Clair River from Sarnia, Ontario. We are looking into various options. We had planned to adopt from Korea and are in the process, but the Korean Gov't is limiting even further the number of babies that can be adopted internationally so the process has really slowed down. Guatamala adoptions look like they are going to close down again soon (at least from the US), our local foster-to-adopt program isn't accepting any more applicants because they have too many. We can go with domestic semi-open adoption, where we will be in a book with 70 other couples for birthparents to choose from. I am just feeling a bit frustrated. I am 36 and my husband is 38. Any ideas? Traveling to adopt would be difficult for us. I work at a school (speech therapist at a school for kids with disabilities). My husband is back in school changing careers (he was a mold maker but the auto industry is down the tubes lately). His school schedule is very intense so it would be difficult for both of us to be out of hte country for an extended period. We could manage a few days but not weeks like some countries require.
Sorry to be so long-winded and whiny. I am just feeling very frustrated right now. A friend suggested Canada since we live so close to there. I also have Canadian relatives. Thanks for your 2 cents! Marnie in Michigan |

Good luck! If that doesn't work out, don't lose heart! You're both close to my and my hubby's ages. We adopted domestically within a year (a healthy cc infant). There are many agencies out there that can be easy to work with!
I think there were around 30 waiting couples with our agency during our process.

In order for a US citizen to adopt from Canada, the potential birthmom would have to give birth in the US. I know of a situation where this has been done.
