Adoption Story
Okay, so I know many of you do not watch Adoption Story on Discovery Channel because they are mostly reruns. I have just discovered this show and have begun to Tivo it. (Actually dh discovered and Tivo'ed for me!!) Anyway, I was off work yesterday and was catching up on some TV. There was an episode that aired on Monday or Tuesday. A couple adotped an infant baby girl domestically. (The birth family already had 4 children and could not care for another.) Anyway, at the very end, the amom said (not exact wording, paraphrasing) 'We love her like she was our own.' or 'We could not love her any more even if she was was our own.' Something like that. I almost threw something at the TV! I could not believe they said that. She is their own. They had already finalized and everything! I was so mad!! Has anyone else seen this one?? I did not watch anymore episodes because I was so mad at them! Anyway, I just wanted to vent a little.

I don't recall seeing that particular one. However, I don't think the amom meant anything by that other than she loves her child no more than she would love her own *biological child*.
I agree it's poor adoption language but I don't think she meant that her child is not her own. It's just the language we're so used to hearing. We have such supportive friends and family who all absolutely adore DS and sometimes they'll make a comment about "no watch, you're going to get pregnant and have one of your own." I know they didn't mean that the way it sounded. Luckily, they have me to gently correct that language - When I do, they are usually take aback about what they said - they'd NEVER intentionally make it seems as though DS wasn't our own. Now, chicky on Adoption Stories' counselor needs to meet with her and give her a short lesson on adoption language I do believe! I hope my post made sense - I feel like I'm rambling. Haven't had my morning chocolate yet! ![]()

I realize she probably did not mean it in a bad way, but I was shocked that a person could get that far in the adoption journey and not realize the proper terminology. I just hope the child does not see the show one and day and feel hurt by the remark.

Ahhh well I guess I may see things a bit differently. I have 2 of *my own* and adopted a little girl, and I use the phrase that "I couldnt love her more if she had come from me". I dont think she meant anything by it either. I think that most people on here read WAY too much into what people say and do when it comes to adoption. JMO
