The Elephant and the Blind Men

Recent heated threads bring to mind a story I read my 2nd grade class while teaching in the Middle East several years ago. Here's a distilled version:

Six blind men were trying to describe an elephant.

The first was at the side. He proclaimed, "An elephant is like a wall!"

The second was at the tusk. He decided, "An elephant is like a spear!"

The third was at the trunk. He declared, "An elephant is like a snake!"

The fourth was at a knee. He asserted "An elephant is like a tree!"

The fifth was at an ear. He announced, "An elephant is like a fan!"

The sixth was at the tail. He claimed, "An elephant is like a rope!"

Each blind man is right, but each understands only part of the whole. That's part of why we come to this forum, to learn about parts of the "elephant" we don't experience directly. Together we put together a composite and more complete picture.

And I thank you all for doing this with me, for showing me the parts of adoption you are intimately familiar with.

book

I read this story to my first graders in the children's book:
Seven Blind Mice.
It is a good lesson.

Well put! And thank you for the reminder that our views aren't the only ones that matter.

I envy your ability to put your thoughts into writing.
I too am grateful for the chance to learn more about the elephant.
