OT - crawl/walk

I know there is no set time for babies to start moving. I was wondering if you could post when your dear one started to crawl and/or walk.

Ours is aiming to, I just wanted the reassurance that it really will happen...eventually.

(Gosh I know how silly this must sound... I have officially become an anxious mom )

THanks,
Sissy

It varies enormously. DS was adopted at 8 months and started sitting up right then, he crawled at about 10 months but it was a comando type of crawl where he dragged himself along with his arms but didn't use his legs. He took his first steps at 14 months and was walking well enough for his first shoes at 17 months.

Sissy, My son is 15 months old. He is walking holding our fingers. He has never stood independently and if you try to let go of his finger he immediately drops to the ground.

My daughter, who is now three, did not crawl until she was 13 months old and did not walk independently until she was 19 months.

Most pediatricians (from my experience and friends) have zero concern until the child is outside of the range, which is 18 months. Then they might do testing or just in office muscular evaluation, which was the case with my daughter; we knew why she did not walk. My current pediatrician said she would have us contact ECI if my son was not walking by 15 months. We have not been, as he recently turned the age, and he has progressed quite a bit since that last visit with her.

It is easier said than done; if you are concerned ask your pediatrician because ECI is extremely valuable. But if you are just worried because other babes his age are doing it, try not to worry. How old is your son? (I see when he was placed but not sure of his age.)

he is only 8 months today

I know, I know..

my concern is not related to other little ones, but to his drug exposure in utero. i have not been concerned about much so far, but this seems to be the issue my anxiety is springing up over

--absolutely no logic

but i know it is irrational which is why i am asking for real life dates to put it in perspective

My dd was doing the comando crawl at 7 1/2 months and she just began actually crawling at 8 months and a few days I too was beginning to think that it wouldn't happen. Your little one was born the end of October so I wouldn't be worried about it at all at this point!!! Enjoy the lack of mobility- it is a wild ride when they can move around on their own, LOL.

Edited:

Sorry, I didn't see that he was 8 months old!! I still wouldn't be worried! A girl in dd's play group (not exposed to anything in utero) just began crawiling at 11 months. They all have their own schedules!

sissy, I think you are cute. Don't worry. Give him time. My darling girl was exposed to nothing, not a thing, and did not crawl until 13 months.

My son was born with drugs in his system and he crawled at 4 months and just started running last night at 9 months. Oddly, he did not sit unsupported until almost 7 months and does not stand unsupported (unless he is running) yet.

I definately would not worry about it. They specifically do not give a time to worry about your baby not crawling in the baby books because it is not a linear developmental skill. I do think I read somewhere that the average time is around 8 months.

My little sister, who is a brilliant articulate marathon runner never crawled, she sort of inch wormed and rolled.

My oldest crawled at 4 mo. and walked at 10 mo. My second crawled at 4 mo. and walked at 8 mo. Drihan didn't crawl or show interest until she was 10 mo. old and it started out as an army crawl and within 2 days it was a full crawl. Her latest thing is scooching along on her butt so she doesn't have to worry about going back into sitting position She has been able to stand on her own since 10 mo and took three steps the other night. She is 11 mo. right now. She is very proficient and pulling up and cruising along the furniture and stuff. However, she is spoiled between me, DH and our two teen daughters so she really has no need to move on her own

And I too thought she would never crawl, so one day I was sitting on the floor and jokingly said "if you want my magazine you have to come get it". Well wouldn't you know it, it was like someone turned on a switch and she army wiggled in lightening speed to get it. My DD and I started laughing hysterically and wondered where that came from.

Our oldest, now 23, didn't walk until 15mo. Of course, all the moms whose children walked at 9mo had their subtle way of hinting that their child was gifted and superior. Well, not really, but I did struggle with thinking my child must surely have something wrong with her. I learned later that the national average (1982) for children to begin walking was 14mo. Wish I'd known that at the time. As has been said, enjoy the immobility. All too soon, your child will be driving you crazy for what he finds to get into.

Makena crawled at 11 months and walked at 14 months. Then she started climbing up the big kiddie slide (four steps) in our yard and sliding down by herself at 16 months. She can now run circles around our 3.5-year-old and is incredibly sturdy on her feet. Go figure!

Our first son did not come home to us until he was 3 1/2 years old and he runs everywhere, so I can't help you with his stats. However his brother who was born drug exposed came home to us at 7 1/2 months and did not crawl until he was 10 1/2 months and did not walk until he was 14 months old. I too was worried, but the doctor told me not to worry just yet. So what I am saying is NO WORRIES....what do Pumba and Timon say?....Hakuna Matata

I had 2 that didn't walk till they werwe 12 months old. One that walked UNASSISTED at 9 months and one walked at 11 months the other 2 walked at 10 months. All of them did the " wounded soldier crawl" at about 5 months. Except for Elijah, who just one day at 6.5 months started crawling on all fours. He never scootched or anything.

Our DS crawled at 10 mos and walked at 13 1/2 months. He is a very strong boy and we have ECI come in for speech therapy. They evaluate them on al levels and his cognitive and fine motor skills are above average. And I was worried when he didn't seem to even want to crawl or walk. Kids do things at their own pace. I am definitely calmer now that he is 25 months, but I appreciate your anxiety. {{{Hugs}}}

Sissy,

Our DS is 10.5 mos and JUST started crawling, the commando type, not the "classic" crawl. I've read that crawling isn't even considered a "milestone" b/c every kid crawls differently and some even not at all.

You've got nothing to worry about IMO.
