Red face Went to church - CAME HOME WITH A 6 WEEK OLD GIRL!!! Help!!!

HELP PEOPLE HELP!!!!

Went to church this morning, two of my boys and I as my dh and the other two are at a hockey game. Ran into a friend whose 14 year old daughter gave birth to an ABSOLUTELY precious baby girl 6 weeks ago (drug exposed, going through withdrawal). Baby has been apprehended once already, and now has been placed with grandma. "Grandma" is pretty young, raising her own 6 year old and dealing with many of her own issues. ANYWAYS ... she is desperate for a break and asked me to take baby home.

So here I am with a NEWBORN baby GIRL , NO FORMULA, NO DIAPERS (grandma was out) ... How much do new babies eat????

HELP!!

start with 4 oz. if she doesn't finish it - then it's enough - if she finishes it jump to 6 oz. They should leave about an oz in the bottle

I agree with MK.. start out at 4 oz. She will probably eat about every 3 to 4 hours. Bet the boys are excited to have a little girl visitor. That poor grandma. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. You are such a special person! You will do great and that grandma will get a little rest.
I am here if ya need help at 6 weeks, they are nice to just snuggle with. Mine is now almost 8 months and would rather bounce on my lap and snatch my glasses than cuddle.
Good Luck,
Jenn

I would be careful with this situation.

My fs was dropped off at his grandma's house and her bmom didn't come for over 2 weeks. Baby had to go to the doctor and then DHS got involved and charged mom with abandonment even though the grandma was very eager to care for him FOREVER.

Sounds like this baby needs more than just your intervention!!! =0(

Social Services is already involved ... Grandma is officially foster mom- but she isnt overly skilled herself and is dealing with her own issues.

Tough call for a church (I am involved with the leadership) to support grandma, and baby but not be taken advantage of as well.

Anyways, part of me just thinks that if someone had stepped in to help my boys' first family how much easier they life would have been.

My dh who just came home from hockey -- lol - not overly impressed with me!!

when H wa a newbie I kept a forumla log so I could track her intake. I always made a 4 ounce bottle but she rarely drank it all. She ate every 2-4 hours.

I'd teleconference to church this evening. Who knows what you'll bring home next time?! Might be something less cute.

LOL Ok practical question here - when you sterilize a bottles -- how long do you boil them for?

HELP! (bought forumla, borrowed a car seat, found my kids "saved" sleepers from when they were babies, and found 8 diapers.) Setting up playpen as we speak and trying to remember how often you change a newborn's diaper.

Did I mention my youngest will be five in two weeks?

Jen,
I just looked this up in "What to expect Baby's first year" and it says you only have to sterilize in boiling water if the bottles are brand new and to do so for a couple of minutes. Otherwise you can wash in the dishwasher or in the sink with dish soap and hot water.

Hope this helped. Oh I changed the baby as needed. I would just check and see if he was wet, or smell if she had the icky ones! It was pretty much every time she woke up and after she ate.
Good Luck! I hope al works oout for this little one and her family.
Jenn

AHHH, Jen, what an awesome gal you are to take this wee babe in.

I honestly forget how long I used to boil the bottles. lol
Maybe 5 minutes? My first son was a "feed-on-demand" baby and always seemed hungry. lol

Take care.

Hi Jen. WOW, what a day!! Trey is six weeks old. He eats five ounces every four hours. I change his diapers every thime he eats, and other times between when needed. I put the bottles in the dishwasher so I don't know how long to boil them.

Good luck, you have done a good thing. I am sure your boys will help. My other son is 6, so I know it is a huge adjustment, but Cory is the best helper.
